Hello,

My cat is 14.8 lbs. The can of Fancy Feast Classic says to feed 1 can per 3 1/2 lbs. That's 4 cans per day, is that right for a diabetic cat too? I'm switching him to wet food b/c of his diagnosis, & since I've never fed him wet, want to make sure 4 cans per day is correct b/c it sounds like a lot...

Sorry if this question is answered somewhere on this site, I did search prior to asking!

Thanks!!

My cat is 10 pounds and he eats 3 - 4 cans of FF (3oz.) a day. Of course, he was down to 7 pounds when diagnosed so he could stand to gain a few pounds. I found that if you add water to the food, they get filled up with less food and they get some good hydration too.

JaimeAnne,

Your cat is going to be very hungry for a while until the glucose is regulated. We usually find that they can eat you out of house and home for a few weeks. Then gradually, they stop eating as much.

Four cans would not surprise me initially, but I would expect that you will be able to cut back to 3 cans.

Do you plan to test at home? Will save you lots of money at the vets.

When initially diagnosed both of my cats were eating a great deal more than they eat now.
Shadoe was eating somewhere around 24oz/day, but is down to barely 6-10oz.
Oliver was eating over 30oz/day, but now eats less than half that amount now.
Until the body is able to extract what is needed from the food, their intake is quite high for many.
As you find your cat becomes regulated, you will see that appetite decrease.

Jamie,

My one diabetic Maxwell, when I first adopted him was trying to eat me out of house and home, at 4 (5.5oz) cans of Friskies, (recommended 1oz per 1lb of cat), and at the time he weighed 10.5 lbs. Now that he is in remission he maintains his weight of 15lbs on 1 1/2 cans. The recommended feeding values are usually based on a non-spayed or neutered healthy, active adult cat. If there is one thing Maxwell isn't that is active, as he perfers to lay around the house and just be beautiful and admired.

Mel, Maxwell, Musette, & The Fur Gang.

Try to learn the number of calories in a can of the food. Did you look at the Binky chart? - or maybe the mfr. can give you the figures.

My rule of thumb is: a cat needs 20 calories per pound per day to maintain his weight. I cut Joey down to 18 calories / lb/ day for weight loss. It's very gradual but safe.

You are doing the right thing to get the cat on wet food!!!!

cedric eats 1 5.5oz can per day (cut into 4 small meals). Yesterday was special since I had to get up for work at 3am, he ended up getting 5 meals (I gave him some tuna).
