So I've got a cat who is diabetic. Our vet told us that she didn't need insulin or needles or whatever but she needed to go on a specific diet. Anyways, our cat eats 2 cans a day and it is getting more expensive every year. We started paying almost half that per can about 2 years ago, its basically doubled and we need to find a cheaper alternative.

What is the best way to go about this? How do we decide which foods to try? I know she need a low carb diet from what I've read, and dry food has too many carbs. She does however frequently gets into our other cats dry food and it doesn't seem to be negatively effecting her. As for switching her over, I intended to do it slowly, probably giving her one can of the Purina DM brand and one of whatever we are trying to switch to. Any thought on this?

Hello and welcome! What country are you located in? That will help us to make some relevant suggestions for you :cat:

When you do the food switch, it’s recommended to do so slowly over the course of a week. Somewhere on the internet there is a specific guideline, but basically you want to slowly increase the amount of the new food and decrease the amount of the old food, until you’re completely feeding the new one. This will help to prevent upset stomach or other GI issues

Here is a link to a thread from earlier today about food options in Canada!

I believe that you have fancy feast classic pate available there, which is a diabetic and cost friendly option. You are looking for a food that is under 10% carbohydrates. I am in the US, so I can’t give any specific recommendations, but there are lots of Canadian members who will hopefully pop in as well :cat:
