Almost done with another bottle--what now?

I'm almost done with Ben's second vial of Prozinc. He still seems to be all over the place. Should I be considering another type of insulin? Of course that would entail a visit to the vet which we have avoided since his diagnosis because I think you all have given me better advice than they have.

A reminder of our situation....I work 12 hour night shifts 3 nights a week which can end up being a stretch of 4 nights or more. On those "days" Ben's shooting schedule is more of 11/13. Occasionally I get home really late from work and the time stretches out even more.

Is there anything that might work better for him or should we just keep doing what we are doing? I'm not opposed to continuing on with the Prozinc but want what is best for him. He definitely has better numbers than he used to but I'd still like to see more blues and greens.

Normally, Lisa, I would say you might consider a longer lasting insulin like Lantus or Levemir, if you're frustrated with ProZinc after 2 vials. But I don't think your schedule would work with those insulins. They really do require a pretty even 12/12 schedule, because they are depot insulins and there is carryover from one cycle to another.

Looking at your spreadsheet, I think he isn't doing so bad. You've had some disruptions in routine and schedule and his numbers are still pretty reasonable. The confusing thing is that he is pretty unpredictable. It may be that the sliding scale makes him a little bouncy, but I do like it for him. With his changeable pre shots, I can't see how you could give him a steady dose.

Thanks for the reminder, Sue. Prozinc really is the best for us (unless I got a new job which isn't going to happen ). So we'll just keep doing what we are doing. Thanks again for the advice. Off to get more insulin. Just bought a big sharps container, 5 boxes of testing strips and a case of syringes. Add to that a new vial of Prozinc and I'm sure that he will be OTJ in no time.
