My almost-19 year old cat is in renal failure and her creatinine levels are very high. She is extremely constipated, dehydrated, weak, knuckling, and will eat only upon prompting. She is 4 pounds. She started urinating near her water dish. We have been giving her sub-Q 2x a week at 100mL per dose. We took her to the emergency vet who kept her throughout the day, gave her sub-Q and two enemas. The enemas did not work. The vet sent her home and told us to increase her sub-Q to 200mL, administered twice a day for a total of 400mL/day in an emergent effort to rehydrate her and to get her to have a BM. We are using Lactated Ringers. Vet said this is a last-ditch effort to bring her creatinine levels down. Our cat is very sick. Is this too much fluid?

Yes, 400 mls is way too much and will cause overhydration and pleural effusion which is life threatening. Can't believe any competent vet would recommend that. Even 200 mls a day is too much for a 4 lb. cat. If the cat is severely dehydrated she should be hospitalized on IV fluids for a day or so to get over the crash, then given daily LRS sub-q fluids at home for maintenance. My 18 yr. old tiny cat got between 50-75 mls/ day.

We lost two cats to kidney - I have no advice, but I just wanted to offer virtual thoughts to all the trials that you're going through.

Both my cats,Ravan & Alice will be 19 in 3 months. They both have Kidney disease for 2 1/2 yrs. Ravan gets 50-75 mls a day & he weighs about 13 lbs. I think 100 mls is too much for a 4 lb. kitty.

Plain Organic pumpkin mixed in the food always helps my Kitties for constipation. Just a small amount. Or Slippery elm. I mix it with a little water & use a feeding syringe.

Have you tried feeding her Plain Organic Beef baby food? You can mix a little pumpkin in it.

It would be helpful if you added more info. What is her creatinine, Phosphorus & calcium levels? Is that her only medical problem that you know of? What is your kitty's name?

Best of Luck to you & your kitty :bighug:

You can also use human Miralax, 1/8 of a teaspoon spread out. I'm so sorry, I wish there was more I could do to help. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
