Alex is home!!!
Negative ketones and negative on the urine test for any infection.
The internist feels that the old vet's UTI diagnosis was incorrect. I did read that urine for a urine culture should be extracted from the bladder with a needle. He thinks that somewhere between me collecting the sample in a plastic cup to it being analyzed that is was contaminated. So, the only other thing that leaves in the insulin. He wants me to go back to ProZinc and he wants to dose at 2.0 units BID. (not sure I can shoot that high yet, especially when the new vial comes in). Fortunately, I kept the last bit of the old vial of ProZinc, so I'm using that until the new vial comes in. I called both vets (visiting and old) and told whoever could get me the insulin first won the order. Of course, the old vet with office staff answered my call and says I should have the insulin tomorrow or Friday. The internist says he can get it for me in the future, just needs a few days lead time and no markup!!!

Internist said that Alex was starting to behave better with him and his staff, so I think I'll have a follow-up appt with him in a month or so and see if we want to switch over to him. The old vet (female and all female staff) are too intimidated by Alex to effectively treat him.

Any way, I put his carrier down on the floor and slowly opened the door. He ran downstairs for dinner! Eating is good!

Once again, thanks for everything--advice, thoughts and prayers.

Nancy, when I see your signature that your Payne has been DKA 4 times, I don't know how you've done it. I do need to lose a few pounds myself, but worrying is not the best way to go about it. nailbite_smile

Why did they poo poo the BCP PZI? It just looks like to me it was a case of too little insulin and not eating enough that triggered it. Some kitties are just more prone to throwing ketones and barely need a reason to have them build up. My guess is once he started eating less, then not eating as much because the ketones made him feel icky was the cycle that started all this mess. You were getting more blues and less pinks with the BCP PZI imo. Don't know that I'd go up to 2u right now, but I definitely wouldn't do 1u after all this. What do you think about 1.5u?

GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When Kitty came home from DKA the vet started her on 3 units bid. Trust me, she was just guessing on the dose--- but she knew she needed insulin. Truly, I think it was too high--- and has contributed to some insulin resistance--- but insulin is key in warding off ketones.

Continue checking for ketones regularly... I test constantly!

I am so HAPPY for you and Sir Alex!!!!!!!!! :-D

I am so glad that Alex is home now...
Just keep on testing for Ketones!!

You can both relax together tonight and cuddle!

How great!! dancing_cat dancing_cat dancing_cat

I have been hoping he would be home soon! Very scary times, very scary and you both did superb!

Payne did the hard work during the DKA's and she is a real trooper! The first three we were at a university hospital and I was sleeping on a chair in front of her. Because it was a teaching hospital students were with all the dr's and they were asking questions .... so I started asking, I learned a lot.

I have had "the talk" from many experts saying Payne couldn't be controlled, she wouldn't be able to live because her diabetes is so?? difficult. I said teach me and I can keep her alive .... so between what I have learned from ER and this list, she is still alive and doing very well! She has gained back all her weight and is being a cat ..... the best thing ever.

So you and Alex will be fine, really ....
