Hi. I posted in the introductions and told to post here. I am feeding him low carb food "luvsome pate" and now hes off RC renal "E" and the RC renal dry.

TOMORROW which would be may 11 at 10am I have a tech appt. I really dont know what to do. He has anemia at 20. He has kidney issues. His sugar is suddenly "high" and he had sugar in urine. The dr wants another pcv and urinalysis. I am limited on funds til I get more money and not sure when. I cant seem to get blood from those glucose monitors and tried it on another cat and could never get blood. I need someone to show me.

What can I do. Hes been showing improvement but the antibiotic I was giving was sweetened and I was just told it's bad but hes been having it all week!! Its sweetened amoxi. I can get him a tablet of baytril or clavanox tomorrow. What do I do? Pls help. Hes unsteady in his feet. I just got his bloodwork and urinalysis..hes on epogen. I'll attempt to upload his labs again. Thank you.

So he may be weak from the anemia. Is he on insulin?

How long has he been on the epogen? Does he get any additional supplements? Iron? B12?
Any history of ketones? Seems if there's no ketones the anemia is a more pressing matter.
Testing bg we can help with. What meter are you using? Some require a tiny bit, and some need as much as half a matchhead size. If you have thin lancets, try using a thicker one that is 28 or 26 gauge. Warming the ear first can help. In the beginning I would sometimes have to poke 2_3 times in the same spot to get a sample. I have a video in my signature showing how I test my cat CC at home. I'll tag @Marje and Gracie who is great at reading labs

I would definitely ask them to test for ketones in the urine tomorrow.
Is he eating and drinking well?
Diabetes is a very treatable disease.

Diabetes is very treatable like Bron said and even with any level of CKD, they can be manageable but you'll definitely want to get the ketone check done. Those can be very dangerous and produce quickly :bighug:. If there's any infection or not feeling well that can impact his BG and usually makes it higher.

His urine ketones from the sample you posted are negative. That’s good. His blood glucose is high but not crazy high so that’s also good. Has he received any steroids lately?

His CKD is also just Stage 2 and that makes me wonder if his anemia is caused by something else. We don’t usually see anemia in a cat at Stage 2 CKD. His potassium is also low and they need to give him something for that but that has to be closely monitored. You can get potassium gluconate at a health food store but I absolutely would not give him potassium without instructions from your vet based on his current potassium value. His blood level of potassium will have to be monitored. If it’s not monitored and it gets too high, it can cause significant problems.

There’s nothing here that tells me that you can’t get him back into feeling better. As was said, the anemia will definitely make him not even want to move. It is at a “take charge” level right now.

I’m traveling but can check back in later tonight. Good luck at the vet today...although I’m not sure why he needs to run another full urine yet. He can test the ketones (you can test them at home) without a full urinalysis.

As Marge said his kidney numbers don’t show advanced kidney disease which makes me suspect something else is causing these symptoms. I think you need an internist or possibly an ER. How long have you been giving Epogen and how often? I’ve used it with end stage kidney disease in a cat before and the HCT came up in a couple weeks. I hope you can find a vet to figure this out.

Hi hes been weak for some weeks and we have been testing BP and PCV..I'm afraid hes near his end. He cant even get up now. I'm afraid if I take him to the vet all they will suggest is to put him to sleep. His hind legs altho warm are not helping hi . I can hardly write at this moment. I woke up at 6am and found him this way next to me. Hes dehydrated..I gave him 50 ml fluids. My meter isnt working and I was just starting to learn. I need someone to teach me. I dont have insulin or anything like that. Indont know if this is the end!

I csnt afford a vet at all. The lump sum of money I had went to all 3 seniors for a variety of testing. Alec had xrays and it was found he had arthritis and hyp dysplasia as well. He has elevated pancreatitis in the labs I posted. I just did his labs amd a urinalysis.

I cant get this human glucose monitor to work its blinking and theres a battery icon present. Even if I find out his blood sugar what do I do then??

Sounds like it needs a new battery. You should be able to find them at most store's. Some Dollar Tree stores even have the CR2032 batteries, which a few meter's seem to use if you're in a pinch for money. :)

DCIN is Diabetic Cats In Need, it's a group that may be able to give you some financial assistance :cat:. Also, check the Supply Closet.

One thing at a time. Breathe. Once you get him feeling better I suggest you switch to a human meter as the test strips are much cheaper. :bighug:

He has low potassium which can cause weakness in limbs and unregulated diabetes can cause neuropathy which causes hind leg weakness. Both are very treatable. Pls keep us posted.

How is everything going, please let us know how is he.

As Marje mentioned low potassium can really make them feel lowsy and very week as does anemia, they both as well as diabetes can be handled
