I wrote a little while ago asking what I could do about Taco getting constipated.

Taco had been on pepcid for nausea for months and at the same time 1/2 tsp miralax twice a day.

It worked pretty well, but, I wanted something more natural and wanted him off pepcid as I had read it isnt good long term.

Through this forum I learned that slippery elm bark could help for both. So I purchased a good SEB powder and started using it . He seemed to do ok with it, NO vomiting and poop fairly ok.

But, the last few days his poop is back to being kind of hard.My daughters description of it is ,it looks like a small sweet potato. Sorry for silly description, but, that's what it looks like and almost just as hard. :(

CAN SEB BE USED WITH MIRALAX? Anyone using it that way with success?

Taco gets equal amount of water to food ration, so ,he gets plenty of water.

Any more ideas??

Sorry to hear you are still struggling with Taco ( I just love his name probably I've said it before but still), as far as I know you can use SEB and miralax together without any problem

Another natural option is to give Taco pumking I've used the one that comes in a can that you can buy at the supermarket just make sure is not the pie filling, is supposed to be ok for diabetic and I know some people here use it but I've never used pumking on Babu just on my civies so I still recommend you monitor his blood glucose at first just to make sure everything is ok

Thank you, I do use pumpkin and miralax on Tacos littermate ,George. But , I don't think that combo would work for nausea :(
I made the SEB on the stove, and had been giving it to him by syringe, and he fights us. Do you put yours mixed in the food or not? And how much do you use?
I was using 1/2 tsp twice a day, maybe that's not enough?

I prepare the SEB on the microwave to be able to make just a bit (1/4 cup) otherwise I ended throwing away most of it and syringe it too, my cats are very finicky eaters so I really can't add anything to their food or they won't eat it, I think you can actually give pumking, miralax and SEB at the same time (in may experience yes SEB works better for nausea than for constipation but also help with constipation a bit ) to a cat you just have to monitor him closely not to give him too much

I would lower his Miralax dosage to 1/8 tsp but give it to him at each and every feeding. Another idea is Weruva, they have several foods that contain pumpkin. My cats love the Meow Luau that has mackerel and pumpkin and they have other flavors that have pumpkin added. Since the pumpkin in cooked in the food they can't taste it or if they do they love it. Another food that's good is Purina Pro Plan Prime Plus. It contains chicory root that also helps things move along. Both these foods are low carb 3% or less.

I thought about doing that each meal and snack :) I think I will. Maybe it's the 2 snacks without anything that are causing the accumulation back up. Good idea to try. You think I should give him 1/8 teaspoon with all his big meals and 2 snacks he gets in one cycle? Try that? That would equal about 1 teaspoon in 24 hours.

I know it works for his brother, but, he only eats twice a day. He's been on it I guess for about 12 years and it works good with him.

Taco was never constipated until he went on insulin, it's not real bad, but I can tell it's a lot harder and bigger, that it looks like it might hurt some when it comes out :(
I've dealt enough with his brother and severe constipation, that I'm trying to avoid that at all cost and ordered 6 feline enemas the other day, hopefully not having to use them.:)

@Cindy&Taco
Is he still on Pepcid?
I would try cancelling it for a few days and see if it helps getting things moving with seb and mira help.
(Unless he clearly has an acidy tummy for instance: vomiting white foam on empty stomach is one of the symptoms). Cerenia or odno can help with nausea.

The problem with pepcid is that is suppresses all acids within the body and some are necessary for proper GI functioning/ emptying valve opening. You can always resume the dose if it 's no help.

Yes try it. You just have to adjust the dosage as needed, if his poop gets too soft back off a little. You have some good experience with his brother so you know it's safe. What kind of snack does he get? When I was giving Dusty freeze dried turkey he stopped up immediately, it was too dry I guess. Dusty has been on Miralax since 2013 with no problems. When he eats the Weruva Meow Luau I can back off a bit.

He NEVER gets freeze dried anything, because I feel that would pull too much water into the freeze dried, which I've read about.
His snacks are 1/2 sheba, which equals about 2 teaspoons, he gets 2 of those in each 12 hours, and his PM&AM meals are 3oz cans of Beyond or about 3oz friskies pate on occasion. Each serving with equal amount of water.Like soup.
He never had that problem before insulin :)
He's not active at all and pretty heavy, so that doesnt help.
I don't know why he stays fat with only about 10 oz of food in 24 hours, but, if not fed regularly he goes on a hunt for whatever might be on the floor, like bits of pine needles or whatever. Crazy cat !
