I bought an Advocate meter from Amazon after reading some really good reviews.I wanted to buy a spare meter just in case my AlphaTrack2 died or the battery ran down. I ran side by side comparisons using the same drop of blood. I was really impressed how close the numbers were. They ran between 2-12 points, considering the 20% allowance by the FDA, those are really good numbers. One thing I really like is that it takes AAA batteries. That is much better then the button battery that the AT takes, although the AT does warn you when it is getting low.

The Advocate starter kit costs $21.99 at Amazon. The strips also cost the same for 50. Compared with Alpha Track2 kit for $50.95 and $58.9 for the strips. The FreeStyle Light strips are made by the same company that makes the AlphaTrack and they are identical. I have been using them, along with several other people on the board and they work fine. They cost $36.49 a box. I have an order for 4 boxes due to be delivered soon.

Right now I have to decide which meter to use for everyday and which to use as a spare. The Advocate is cheaper, but the AT is smaller and fits my hand better. Today I saw someone tell a new person that the AT strips cost $100/box. I wonder where they came up with that number?

That person is probably in Canada and buying the AT strips from the vet. My vet here in Ontario charges $102 CAD for a box of 50 AT strips. They're really, really expensive here! I can get them slightly more cheaply from a Canadian online pet pharmacy - $87 CAD for 50 (after taxes and shipping). By comparison, the Freestyle Lite strips at $90 CAD for 100 at local pharmacies are a bargain but still very pricey.
 
Those prices are awful! We are told that Canada has cheaper meds. Too bad that does not extend to pets. Can you order from Amazon?

No, I've checked. Amazon.ca doesn't carry AT strips and Amazon.com won't ship them here. Yes, Lantus is a lot cheaper here and I assume Levemir would be as well, probably because they're human meds and are likely subsidized - that old socialized medical system we have! ProZinc is very expensive. I pay about $127 CAD per vial at my vet's.
 
I am so sorry that some people have to pat so much when we Americans pay so little. I posted here because I know kittys are going untreated or put down because of the expense . I want people to know they have another choice. There is a meter that is both dependable and inexpensive.
 
A suggestion for the Canadian buyers. Have you considered using a forwarding service or ship to a friend in the US who then forwards to you? It might be a bit cheaper, even with the second round of postage. You'd have to factor in the extra shipping time when you ordered, however. I sell clothing online and see international customers using these services all the time. Check out reship.com and borderlinx.com as they specialize in Canadian receiving addresses. I *think* you can also have funds in PayPal in USD (or is it select pay in USD?), which might help with the cost as well (but I'm not the most knowledgeable about foreign rate conversions).
