Dasher is now consistently high, today he was at 266 4 hours after eating and 282 2 1/2 hours after eating. We have a vet appointment today at 2:00 . I leave for a 10 day vacation Thursday and would love to get him started on his Lantus , problem being my hubby can give the shot while I'm gone but is not comfortable in testing his bg.
I don't know what to do.
Do I hopefully start him today and this is only if the vet will write the script today ? If I can start today I could closely monitor him ov the next 3 days to see how he reacts, keep in mind he went into remission in less than 2 weeks last time and the vet had me give him way too high of a starting dose and I lowered it right away.

Would not starting him until I come back something I should do or do I get him started ?

I'm dealing with a herniated disk in my back and a head cold , this all started and I'm freaking out a little.

Please someone give me advice .

I know a couple who's cat is on Lantus and they never test him they just shoot, I a, so not comfortable with this but I can't stamd knowing my boy has high blood sugar and I'm doing anything .

Personally I think I'd hold off since your Husband isn't willing to test his BG. Since Dasher has reacted quickly in the past I don't think I'd personally be comfortable with it. If I had too I might give him a token dose, Something that I know wouldn't lead to remission but will support his insulin production a tiny bit.

That's kind of how I feel , just wait until I get back. I'm afraid of doing him harm by not treating but the flip side is doing more harm by shooting without knowing if it's safe to shoot.
I imagin he was diabetic for some time before we realized something was wrong the first time. Today's number are the first time he's over 170 so I know it haven't been over 200 long.

Just to throw my 2 cents worth in...if it were me I would probably wait until you are back before starting since your hubby can not test. Dasher's numbers are not extremely high and if he has never had a DKA episode waiting would not be a bad choice. In the meantime you could do some tests at home before you leave, to get an idea of how he reacts to food and how much he will come down on his own after the food wears off. Also if he is eating any hard food or high carb wet food it would be the perfect time to transition him off of that before you start insulin treatments

He on FF clasic and YAZC , we will now cut back on the YA because of calories and he needs to loose some weight.
The vet we seen I didn't like at all, she seemed to only know about diabetes from what she's read in her textbook .
I will not deal with her again that much I know. They did the full blood labs as wel as urine and we will hear back tomorrow. She had no idea what a SoloStar Lantus was so I showed her a picture on my phone. I did tell the tech that I wanted my regular vet to call me with the results tomorrow.
I appreciate all and any thought on this, I also feel I will wait until I get back to start treatment as lond as the urine comes back okay.

Thanks for your thoughts .

I'll have too see. I know so many of you do this but we had no luck getting urine samples from either cat. I hope the test for the vet is negative for ketones although I know things can change in 10 days.
My hubby isn't much help with this , he thinks he can manage the shots but he makes me nervous. My sweet boy hasn't had any increased hunger or really thirst but I would imagin it will start soon now that his numbers are higher.
