Hello!
Lily has been having a lot of itching lately and has a tiny scab above her temple. She scratches a lot at her temples, ears, and neck and I'm unsure if it's due to a potential food allergy, an ear infection, or something else. She also MAY have had a worm in her stool but I couldn't really tell. And on top of that, she's had 3 small wheezing fits in the past 2 weeks. Looking back at some notes I have on her, she does tend to have these asthma flare ups in the summer. Vets in the past haven't pushed for treatment since it still seems mild and now that she's been diabetic, we know steroids are a last resort.
We're OTJ at the moment but with these new things going on, I decided to do some extra check ups on her BG and we're ranging from 102 to 114, when she's usually in the 80s or mid 90s (on an AlphaTrak 3). It's still within the normal range but higher than what I'm used to seeing.
I brought her in to the vet this morning and she's currently there getting a chest x-ray and an ear cleaning/swab. This isn't her usual vet as they were booked out for weeks, so the vet I saw is new to me. He prescribed doxycycline, an ear wash, and a dewormer (Drontal). I'll be going back soon to pick her up but I'm wondering if there's anything I'm missing to check on. Should I have requested bloodwork as well to see if there's evidence of an infection? Or should the doxycycline help with that? Is the doxycycline even warranted?
I usually trust vet recommendations but after agreeing to Animax and a dexamethasone shot last year around the same time (dexamethasone wasn't even necessary, vet just said it might help and wouldn't hurt), which may have caused her diabetes, I want to be sure these are the right steps.
