Advice(non urgent)

Hi there! Although Oswald’s demeanor and weight has gotten back to pretty much normal(hooray!), it doesn’t seem like his numbers want to go down. But I do keep in mind that this is a marathon, not a sprint. Could someone take a look at his numbers and let me know if I should up his dose? Do another curve day? Wait a few more days and see if the last bump in dose kicks in? It’s been 10 days since we upped his dose from 1U to 1.25U. Thank you in advance!

I see on your SS that you are doing the SLGS method. You are testing enough to do the TR method if you wanted to, as long as you are not feeding dry.
In the meantime, can you put SLGS in your signature please.
Yes I think you can increase the dose to 1.5 units.
Are you feeding several times a day and evening?

Yes he gets a full can at both shot times(6am and 6pm) and then half a can around noon and half a can around 10pm.

I’m going to be honest. Even after reading the sticky or post about SLGS and TR, I don’t really understand much of a difference between the two. There’s seems to be a lot of similarities in the descriptions. The only reason I’ve been testing so often are because 1. I have the time to(got laid off bc of COVID) and I want to understand how his body is reacting to the insulin and 2. I was asked to fill in more numbers when I previously asked about dosing advice. Soon I will not have opportunity to test outside of shot times very much so I have decreased the amount I’ve been testing lately. SLGS is on his spread sheet so I will definitely add it to the signature. Unless I’m not really following that method and I’m more so doing the TR. Again, I’m pretty unsure of the real difference :/ I’m sorry, every time I think I’m getting the hang of this, something throws me off my game!

The main differences in the two methods is with SLGS you can feed dry food, increase every 7 days if needed, after doing a curve, and reduce the dose at 90.
With TR you can only feed canned or raw food, you can increase every three days if needed, and you reduce the dose at 50.
If you are happy with SLGS that is absolutely ok.

I would look at giving him some food a bit earlier in the cycle than +6 I think. You could split the am food into two lots at say +3 and +6.

Ohhh ok. Yes I think that SLGS makes me more comfortable bc I’m absolutely terrified to over dose him! Thank you for dumbing that down for me, sometimes I need that lol also, there are times when he slips over to his sisters food bowl and crunches a bit on her dry food. It’s not often or very much that he eats but she’s a princess and likes a little dry food and a little wet(insert eye roll here) so it’s hard to constantly keep an eye on him

I’m trying to get to a point of figuring out the feeding with him bc soon I’ll be leaving for work right after his am feeding time and no one will be home until pm feeding time. I did the frozen wet food when I left for a 10hr period, that seemed to work. But feeding twice during am cycle will not be an option when I go back to work so im afraid of him getting used to that

So he could definitely eat that am “snack” earlier and likely will... but likely won’t have any food in the later part of the cycle which is concerning

Ok. Have you thought about an auto feeder?
How do you know he will get the food when you are not there if you have another kitty?

It is usually better to feed the cat in the first half of the cycle when the insulin is strongest. It usually starts to wane in the second part of the cycle.

She doesn’t much care for canned food. And luckily Oswald doesn’t much care for the dry food. For the most part they’re pretty good at eating their own foods(their bowls are in separate rooms) but sometimes he wants a little more and sneaks over to eat whatever dry food she may have left. I could look into an auto feeder... but then I feel like I would have to get two? And right now I’m REAL strapped for money.

Ok so maybe I will try that frozen canned food thing again while im home and try to get a reading in the start of the cycle and a reading towards to end so I can see what’s going on. I’d really like to get a system down for him before I go back to work bc both my boyfriend and I work long days and far from home so I’m already pretty worried

I had an auto feeder that opened at the times I set it. I found it invaluable.
If you think your other cat might eat the food you could buy two feeders and set them to open at the same times.

Ok, I’ll try to make due without until I get back on my feet monetarily. If I ever see unemployment check or stimulus check come through, that might be the time I can get auto feeders. They work with wet food?

Alright I see they do work with wet food. I’m doing some research and will add them to my amazon cart for when I have money. Thank you for all your helpful advice! You’ve been so awesome at answering my dumb questions
