I have been giving Dainty 3 units of insulin 2x for some time now. Her numbers seem to be pretty much all over the place even though I am testing her at the same time everyday. Her average though, seems to be around 250-300. Tonight I gave her 1 unit of insulin at 6:30 pm and then tested her twice, once at 8pm (319) and then again at 11pm (198). To summarize.. Why is Dainty getting the same levels on 1 unit as she does on 3 units, is she sick? Should I contact my vet?

When she was first diagnosed in December, she was started off on 2 units. I was actually wondering if it was Somogyi Rebound because of the randomness of her readings. It was the reason that I tried her at 1 unit tonight.

Okay, so I tested her for the last time tonight at 1:15 (187). What do you guys think? Was 3u an overdose? Should I go ahead and only give her 1u tomorrow morning?

You are using prozinc, right?

You might want to post on the PZI board and ask for their thoughts concerning dosing.

Hi Renegaderem, and, of course, you too, sweet Daisy (love her name!!!),

Sometimes less is more. It may be that Daisy was started at too high a dose. Maybe not. Maybe she's just being a cat. Maybe she's a sugar cat who's pancreas still kicks in from time to time... You know Daisy better than anyone else on the planet, so I'm thinking you'd be the first to know if she is sick and therefore needs to see her vet...

Because you are home testing (YAY!), you will probably figure this out. Then again, she is a cat... ;o)

Because you are suspecting rebound, my humble suggestion is to start over/continue with the 1 unit dose, and cross post your questions/results both here and on the PZI Support Group forum. For some strange reason, it's just easier to add a bit than to reduce as more readings/information become available; thus, the FDMB's start low, go slow approach... Can't explain it; but, have seen it with my own two eyes -- with two sugar cats...

It is most interesting and rewarding sharing life with a sugar cat, isn't it, Renegaderem?

Please keep us posted kind of encouraging hugs,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

PS: She's eating okay, right? Do you catch pee and test for ketones?

I would consider starting over at one unit, testing regularly. If you can, do a curve - testing every 2 hours during a day. Are you testing for ketones? If not, I would start: ketones

It would be very helpful for us and you if you would set up a spreadsheet. It is a color coded tool that will help you see trends and patterns, and will help us see your history when you ask for dose advice. We have had some trouble with it loading lately on some computers and it is sometimes just slow to load. If you have trouble, just ask for help. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18207

I went ahead and gave her only 1u this morning. I will check her again in about two hours to see if the BG is declining. Luckily its a Saturday, I'll be home all day today and can test her more frequently. I just created a spreadsheet. The numbers are a little bit all over the place since I was just learning to draw blood and my success rate was really not that high. I am not quite sure what Amps and Pmps but I'll post them once I figure it out. I haven't been testing her for ketones but it sounds like I should be, anyone know where to get ketodiastix in Seattle? I tried the Fred Meyers by my house and they didn't sell them. Dainty's been eating really well lately, actually she's been eating too well. She recently went up from 13.2 to 13.9.

It looks like you are headed on the right track with one unit.

The ketostix should be available at any drug store. They're the same kind humans use and should be with the diabetic supplies.

Amps is the number you get in the am before you shoot. Pmps is the evening number, 12 hours later.

Based on your initial numbers with the 1 unit dose, you seem to be getting lower numbers. I'd stay on this dose for a while and see where your cat goes with it; 3 units is a really high dose.

AMPS is your "A.M. Pre Shot" number, and your PMPS is "P.M. Pre Shot" number. It's the BG (blood glucose) reading that you get just before you shoot insulin. +1 is an hour after either shot, +3 is three hours after the shot, +9 is 9 hours after, etc.

Each curve (the reading from the Pre-Shot number through +11) takes into account the effect of the insulin throughout the 12-hour cycle.

Keep asking questions so that we can help.

Alright, so today she was higher than last night. Her numbers were 349 at +2 hrs, 333 at +4hrs and 347 at +6hrs post shot. Tonight I think I will give her 1.5 and watch her reaction.
