? Advice needed to help prevent dose yoyo

Stumpy's carer

Member Since 2025
We haven't been able to try and do a glucose curve yet as after every 5th or 6th dose Stumpy's BGL have been doing what we consider to be a relatively big drop. We have been trying to follow the guidelines in the FDMBs FAQ Q4.4 for handling a lower number than normal when you don't have a lot of data, so have been shooting a lower dose. My question really revolves around what do you do next, do you go back to the original dose? continue at lower dose? go to a dose 0.25U under the original dose? something else? Perhaps we are being too conservative and shouldn't reduce the dose?

What we have done so far is to shoot a lower dose and then continue at a lower dose but it doesn't hold him so we have ended up back at the original, and it would be nice to keep his BGL and his dose trending downwards.

NB we are still giving him treats which are high carb as we wait for the zero carb ones to arrive from the US, they are currently at the airport so waiting to clear customs (fingers crossed). We have tried giving him freeze dried treats, and sometimes he seems to enjoy them and others not. Not sure how much impact this is having.

Thanks

When you reduce the dose because of a lower preshot than you are yet used to, it is a one time only thing. Go back to the last previous dose the shot after that. We do have a couple dosing methods here, and with both of them you only reduce the dose going forward if they go under what we call the reduction point. Which is either below 90 or below 50, depending on the dosing method being followed. And you reduce by 0.25 units when you do reduce.

Have you ever tried Ziwipeak air dried food for him? They have a lamb flavour and are low carb. Feline Natural, another NZ brand, also has low carb treats. Also check out the New Zealand Natural Pet Food Co treats, look for the single ingredient meat ones, not the blends as some of them have honey.

Thanks very much that is good to know, re the one time only. We just did a plus 7 reading and he has dropped from the am reading of 310 down to 158 and that was after giving the original 3U dose. To us that seems like quite a big drop, it will be interesting to see where he is at pm. I think his beef allergy has complicated things (a lot).

We haven't tried any of the air dried foods yet only freeze dried, as we thought he might like that texture better. We will definitely get some and try them.

Plain cooked chicken makes a great treat :) Poach some in plain water, shred or chunk up, freeze what you won't feed within a day or two. Some cats may even go for plain cooked chicken liver or even raw liver and raw chicken gizzards and hearts.

There are Australia / New Zealand treats listed here:

Thanks very much for the updated list I will have a look and see what we can get as well as making sure they don't contain beef.

Stumpy has never been a big fan of cooked chicken, but I'll see if I can get some hearts, liver etc and try him on those.
