Hello everyone! I wanted to ask for advice as my vet is closed today and unsure what to do. My cat was diagnosed with diabetes around 4 months ago. She started off on 1 unit 2x daily and after going back for a blood glucose curve test , they raised it to 2 units 2x daily. She has been on the 2 units for about 2 months now.
About a week ago i noticed she was eating very little and was having diarrhea very suddenly out of no where. I monitored her for the next day to see if there was a change but it only got worse to where she stopped eating completely. I called the vet and booked an appointment for the next morning and skipped the insulin that night (Thursday) as per vets instructions. The vet told me that if she ate in the morning i could go ahead and give her the insulin before bringing her in. So, Friday morning i was able to get her to eat ( with a lot of coaxing) to where i was able to give her the insulin and then proceeded to take her to the vet.
When we got there they ran a bunch of tests and determined she was dehydrated and also had a blood glucose reading of 46mg/dl which i know is extremely concerning. They tested her urine for ketones and it came back negative. They gave her an iv drip of fluids for the dehydration and sent me home with antibiotics (as vet is concerned with a possible uti since they are more prone) and a probiotic for diarrhea. She also told me to stop the insulin and monitor her blood glucose periodically and see but if it drops any lower because then i would have to take her to emergency vet.
A few hours later i used the human ReLion Platinum glucose monitor to test her and received a reading of 99mg/dl. I called the vet and asked if this is okay and she said yes but to still not giver her insulin and monitor her glucose levels throughout the weekend. She told me based on her fructosamine test it looks like she could be going into remission so to keep an eye on it. (She said her fructosamine test looks like she could have been starting to go into remission for that last few weeks? Though i am unsure what she means by this) She also said we might need to go back to 1unit 2x daily but again, to wait and see what her levels look like. She told me if it goes over 200 mg/dl that we might want to start her on that 1 unit again.
Here is my concern: This morning when i ran her blood glucose on the HUMAN relion meter i got 249mg/dl. I think this would mean she is over 200 mg/dl on a normal animal blood glucose reader? Since i cant get ahold of my vet til tomorrow im unsure if this is a dangerous level for her to be at or if i should be more concerned? I also do not want to start her on the 1 unit of insulin again without first confirming with my vet. I also will mention that she has not had diarrhea in about two days but she is going to the bathroom less frequently. She had a regular (if not very tiny )bowel movement yesterday and this morning (no diarrhea!) But i know this may have to do with her eating and drinking less right now.
I apologize for such a long post, i am just trying to figure out the proper steps to take as i felt my vet didn’t seem super concerned but i know how quickly these things can take a turn for the worse. Should i be concerned about these numbers ? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
*Note: she was VERY cranky and irritable over the week when she wasn’t feeling well and since stopping the insulin and not giving it to her since Friday morning , she is so much more sociable and friendly again.
