so after having a diabetic cat for years and recently losing him here we go thinking about adopting another sugar baby. But before we do we need to figure out how hard it would be to switch from catsil (not sure of the name for sure this is from the foster but it is a cat insulin) to Lantus which we have used before. Any help would before.

If it's a "cat insulin" it's has to be one of these: ProZinc, Vetsulin/Caninsulin, or PZI. Please check with the person who currently has the diabetic cat for the name of the insulin as well as the current dose.

There are many people here who switched from a pet insulin to Lantus with no problem at all  Once you post the name of the insulin and dose, people here can better help you with how to switch.

There is really no problem changing. I have done it several times before. You usually state off at one unit twice daily unless the does on the other insulin was less than one unit.

It's wonderful that you are thinking of adopting a diabetic kitty.

A few things that might help, if they can, ask them to give you all the vet records they have. It's always helpful to have past information, even if it's just bloodwork and the vet's notes from anything the rescue group has had done. Prior info from previous owner would be great, but they may not have it.

Find out what food the sweetie is on and transition slowly to whatever food you will be feeding, hopefully a nice canned food only diet.

Switching insulin is not too hard, post here and ask questions, you'll be fine.

I do know they are feeding dry Diabetic food from the vet!!!!!!!!!! YIKES first thing will be to get him off of that crap and on an all wet diet. I still can't believe vets recommend that crap and I'm scared that they are not testing daily from the conversation I had with the foster today...very scary especially since he is newly diagnosed cat only a couple of month and he has lost about 2 lbs already

First, thank you for adopting a diabetic cat.

I have adopted two diabetics and have never had an issue with changing insulins. If the cat was on a short acting insulin, I changed insulins at the next shot that was due. In the case where I have changed from one long acting insulin to different one, I usually skip a shot and then begin with the new insulin on the following shot.

Thank you for opening your home to a sugarkitty!

Switching isn't difficult. And unless the current insulin is Prozinc, Lantus or Levemir, you should switch to one of them.

Welcome,
Carl

It is not Lantus and I don't think it's any of the other ones. It is a pet insulin. We are going to call tomorrow and find out when we can pick him up so I will have all the info then. I am hoping to have him home before the weekend is over. I know that the foster is trying their best but they don't seem to be all that knowledgable about diabetic cats.

Another question a friend just brought up about where to shoot we have always shot in the scruff of the neck but she thought the new protocal was for the flank...Any feedback on where is the best place to shoot?

Scruff of the neck is fine, and so is the flank. I can't speak for either because Bob was sort of a special case. There are people who have shot in various locations though, and I'm sure they'll have some feedback for you. What I have read here is that the location seems to have an effect on how the insulin is absorbed, and locations other than the scruff can be beneficial in that regard. I know that if you search youtube for "feline diabetes insulin", you'll get lots of links to videos that show you several good locations and techniques.
