Hi All,
it's been a little bit since I posted. We've been pretty busy here.
Todd is doing.. ok. He looks skinnier to me, so I need to get him weighed tomorrow. But he's holding on.
I have a couple of questions about the drug Adequan. About three weeks ago, our vet suggested that we should start Todd on it. He has some Arthritis in his back knees and spine. He got his first shot on November 23nd. He had spent the 17th until the 23rd at the vet, because we were out of town. They said he did really well.. very happy, alert and ate well.... Anyway, he gets two shots each week for 4 weeks, then once a week for a bit. He seemed to be doing pretty well, however I have noticed a bit of a decline in him over the last week. Not eating as much, acting tired and seeming like he's having some trouble controlling his back legs a bit. However he is VERY alert, and when I open a can of tuna, he comes racing (as fast as he can race, which isn't fast) into the kitchen. So he's alert and able to move fast if need be. hehe I've watched his BG and it's ok.. I do believe I'm going to take him in to the vet tomorrow for a check up/follow up, just to be safe. But anyway.. the questions.. is it better to give the injections in the muscle or just under the skin like his insulin? The vet said to just do it under the skin, but I've read in the muscle is better. I'm curious what you folks do and how well it works for you...
Also, about how long does it take until you see some kind of improvement? It's been three weeks now, and I don't see a ton. As I mentioned, he's having a bit of trouble with his back legs at the moment.
Last question, I've noticed he isn't having as many bowel movements as he was weeks ago.. would the Adequan cause him to have BM issues? He is peeing normally, just not much in the way of BM's, an when he does go, they are rather hard.
Would you suggest anything else for him, to help him be more comfortable?
He is 16 years old, a diabetic (on Lantus), he has early stage renal failure (but it seems to be hitting him really hard), he is a picky eater and really doesn't like canned food... unless it's tuna.
He is currently on
Lantus 1.5 twice a day
Tumil-k one pill a day
Adequan 0.5 twice a week
Mirtazapine every 48 hours
100ml Sub-Q every other day
He eat k/d dry and sometimes a tiiiny bit of the k/d canned.
Thank you!!
Sarah
