Spike will be starting 0.4 ml of adequan. Am I correct that this will be 40 units on the insulin needles I use now. I know my needles only go up to 30 units so I'll have to add 10 more units to make up the 40. I use monoject 3/10 cc.
Thanks ...Janice

HI Janice - you should check with your vet. The needles/syringe that I got for adequan injections is actually smaller then an insulin needle. My cat is on .15 of a ml dose which isn't very much. Sitka has done VERY well on adequan and I swear its the only reason she can still walk. Her arthritis is so bad that when a radiologist looked at her xray he said he'd never seen a cat that arthritic that could still walk. Jan

Jan, I am curious what needles you use for the adequan. You said they were smaller than insulin syringes. Insulin syringes with 31 gauge needles are about as small useful diameter as there is. This previous post said they used 25 gauge needles.

Yes, 40 units with a U100 syringe is 0.4 ml. Remember that U 100 means100 units per ml.

How much does Spike weigh? Gandalf re ceived .26ml of Adequan and he weighed 14lbs. .4ml is a lot unless Spike weighs close to 20lbs.
The syringes used for Adequan are 1ml syringes. Their barrel is larger in circumference than 3/10cc iznsulin syringes. I don't think insulin syringes would be advised with Adequan though. It is a thicker liquid than insulin and insulin syringe needles would probably be too fine of gauge to draw it well.
Just get the 1cc syringes from the vet to be safe.

Spike weighs about 16 pounds. The vet researched adequan for cats and because Spike has bad arthritus and there seems to be no fear of overdosing shes starting with this amount.

J.D. gets 15 units of Adequan using his insulin syringes. I have not noticed any difference in the thickness of the fluid.
My vet mentioned that it may be too thick, but then he tried it with an insulin syringe and it went through just fine.

Hmm, maybe I should have used insulin syringes then! I had trouble drawing it, it did not seem to flow as easily as insulin. I just used the syringes the vet gave me. Sigh.... ohmygod_smile

The only issue I read about for Adequan was possible blood thinning.

I just ordered SureComfort Insulin Syringe 29 Gauge, 1cc, 1/2", 100 Count
This should make it easier to give him the full dose in one shot. Now to decide where to shoot him. He gets shots on each side for insulin. Luckily he has a lot of skin.

HI Janice, I checked my Adequan syringes and the SureComfort you listed are the syringes that I got to use with them. As far as where to give the shot - I do it in the shoulder area (which Sitka is okay with because she gets subq fluids there too).
