Hi all,

I usually post in Lantus Land but figured this is a health question. I was at the vet a week and a half ago for blood tests/check up due to higher BG and didn't have the main vet (male) that owns the practice, I had a new one (female). Here's my last condo: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=109463 The itchy ears have calmed down and are normal temp to touch now but BG is still up there.

I called the vet office today asking for possible prescription for an arthritis injection. I am told that it's usual for Adequan (or apparently in Canada it's common to give Cartrophen) for arthritis injections. Chyna has been on cosequin for years and it's worked well, but recently her BG had been going up and she is walking stiff/lowering herself carefully to sit and I'm wondering if she needs more like a prescription as pain can make BG rise. I've upped the cosequin dose too, to 2 capsules a day from 1 for the past week.

But when the tech called me back she said he didn't want to give me any injections since it's all run through the kidneys and she has CKD. I mentioned Adequan which she'd never heard of but couldn't remember the name of the Cartrophen, I was at work at someone elses desk when they finally phoned ohmygod_smile She said all they have is Metacam (which I KNOW not to give and she agreed). I am going in tomorrow to discuss (without Chyna), as they mentioned doing a fructosamine to see if she's out of remission (which I think is a waste of time since I've been testing and said so, plus I don't want to do another blood draw so soon) and a urinalysis (which I can always do at home and bring in if they will let me, my old vet did) to try spare her the stress of going in again. She did pee the carrier last week when in and she tested her urine for glucose and it was negative and said it was diluted. He did recommend upping the subq fluids to every day for a week to see. I'll start insulin again if that is what she needs, but if it's something solveable like infection or pain...

Does anyone on here give injections for a CKD and diabetic cat (in remission too) and does it affect them/their kidneys so much? Just looking on some pointers for when I chat with him...and suggest or refuse testing that may not be needed but could use help :-D Thanks!

I don't quite understand the injection objection for CKD/diabetic so I guess I'll watch your answers too.

Mine is on the probable path to CKD and I'm doing the adequan. ( and about to start the cosequin and fish oil supplement)
So I guess I'll be monitoring your responses too.

Have they ever done an x-ray to confirm the arthritis? I think that would be what I would be asking for if you haven't done that already.

Hi Rhiannon:) I'm the opposite of you, cosequin and fish oil. No, I don't think there were x-rays, but the old vet examined her and pressed on certain places of her bones (made her cry and struggle to get away  ) and combined with the limp/stiff walking he said it was arthritis. Cosequin solved it and she was doing good until recently...

curious. They press on Shadow's joints, hips, shoulders, and she doesn't react at all... but the x-rays show it to be bad... and you're aware of the
pending problems.

diagnostic tools are really useful to figure out what's happening.

All I can say is I had Gus on adequan injections and he was CKD. He took them about six months and they didn't help his arthritis but they also didn't harm his kidney values. That was fairly early in his CKD and he lived almost three years past that. I know some of the other diabetic cats in LL get adequan and it doesn't affect their BG but I don't know if they are also CKD. I would def stay away from MetaCam....you are so right about that and it's black boxed specifically because of kidney damage it's done in cats.

I wouldn't do a fruc test....you are right; it's a waste of your money. If you are giving fluids, the specific gravity is likely to be low unless you don't give fluids for a couple days before you take in the urine sample. I would follow my gut and make it as easy on Chyna as possible. Why take her in unless she really needs to go? You're a great mom and if that is what your gut is telling you, stick with it.

Unfortunately, I don't have any data or documentation on the adequan and CKD. You could google it...... :-D

I wish I could afford x-rays, I'm not even sure how I'll come up with lantus $$$ which I have a feeling I will need (maybe I'm a pessimist ...). Marje I've been goooooogling ;-) . Sometimes it just gives you a bunch of links to stuff you aren't looking for, maybe I'm doing it wrong  Thanks, I'm trying to be a good bean. I just want to help her, I know she is just a bit "off". Even though she is purring and seems happy and alert...and is eating etc. A little extra constipation but I think that's the extra Pepcid (just a guess).

Maybe all they know is the Metacam since it's all they stock and assume all are bad for kidneys...I don't know. I'm not even sure if I can get Adequan in Canada but if they'd give me an Rx...I could try for it or the Cartrophen. I just wish Chyna could tell me exactly why the BG is up so I could fix it
