Hi Everyone.

Angel has to have a bad tooth pulled that showed up out of nowhere. I had her teeth cleaned last year hoping she wouldn't have to be put under Anesthesia for the rest of her life. Now she has an infected fang..

I dont know what to do about her insulin dose?? I will be able to feed her before she goes. But she may not be worked on for a couple hrs. and then we cant pick her up untill 5:30. She wont eat anything at the vets I am sure as she hates going there (of Course). So I am totally confused on what to do? Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Ive got her up to 1.3u now. She isnt regulated though just yet , she is very hard to manage on her bg levels.
Ill be checking frequently for an answer.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE.

My diabetic never had to have a dental. Several PZI users have had recent dentals - Simon's Mommy is one, BJM is another. You could send them a pm and ask what they did. Or post on Health where there will be more eyes.

The night before, feed and shoot as normal.

Pick up food at the vet-specified time, usually midnight.

In the morning, check the glucose level.
Talk with your vet. If at a normal pre-shot, you might give half the normal dose ... or you skip, as anesthesia and fasting tend to reduce the level.

Remember - better too high for a day, than too low for a moment.

And with an abscess, an antibiotic is a good idea. The vet can give an injection of clindamycin (it tastes awful), plus a take home of another one such as Clavamox. Get the tablets and an oral syringe, so that if you can't pill easily, you can dissolve the tablet in the syringe with some water, then give it that way. The oral version is flavored for kids ... with sweeteners that aren't OK for a diabetic cat.

Re: Abscessed tooth being pulled tomorrow. Need dosing help

Thanks for the reply, I've been a ball of nerves all day, but everything seems to have gone well with her. They did pull her tooth. I gave her a tiny dose .10 this morning. They checked her at noon and she was 375' before her dental work . We will be picking her up in a couple of hrs. I have amox for her the plain liquid, I've had her on it for 5 days now also as we couldn't get her into the vet until today. She is very easy to give this to.. Pills, that's another story :)
Iam hoping she will eat when she gets home.. Thanks again for the reply.

Paws crossed that she will bounce back and feel well. It's possible that if she has had an abscess and has been in pain awhile, that might have caused her numbers to rise.

She is looking real good! Thank goodness!! But still going to keep close eye on her for a few days with bg numbers ect.
