Hi everyone, I have a question about insulin shots, I give my cat two needles a day, 1 unit each time.

My dad is sick in the hospital and he is about an hour and a half away from me, I may have to go at any minute if anything happens with him.

So my question is: I have someone that can look after her for needles, they have in the past, but mainly weekends, so they were able to give her both needles. I know its not best for her, but would it be ok/be bad for her, if she could only get one needle on some days? I really hope she could get both, but just in case. I would like to get your opinions/information.

I would love to bring her with me, but my sisters kids are almost deadly allergic to cats, and they tend to visit my dads house alot. :(

Thank you.

One shot a day instead of two is not ideal, but better than none. Are you still giving Caninsulin? We started with that, as many older Canadian vets were taught that.

Another thought - often there are techs at the vets office who can stop by and give insulin. I had a friend go on holidays for 3 weeks and a vet tech came in twice a day to feed and give insulin.

ETA: I just looked at some of your older posts here. If you are interested in blood glucose meters to start testing, the Aviva AccuCheck and Bayer Contour are commonly used in Canada. They require a relatively small blood drop and you can get strips fairly cheaply on Ebay. And usually the meter is free with the first purchase of strips.

Yes in Canada, you get the meter for free if you buy a box of strips. I was buying my strips in the store but way too pricey.

To add tho, its really NOT that much cheaper buying them on eBay as you have to pay shipping, PLUS import charges and altho I "won" a bid for 400 strips and 400 lancets thrown in for $285, I ended up paying nearly $350 in shipping and import duties. Not so good. Better than stores here but not by much.

Thank you for the info on the meters, I will look into it in the very near future.

Yup, still using Caninsulin, was actually thinking of going into a drugstore here and asking them if I can get insulin there and needles, maybe cheaper.

The vet around here don't have that service, they just said get someone who can do both. :(

I have used a vet tech to pet sit Neko. It wasn't a service offered by the vet, but something she did on the side. Actually several people there offered pet sitting services. The other place to try, if you have it, is the local animal humane society or SPCA. They often have volunteers or workers who know how to give shots.

Lantus and Levemir are available over the counter in Canada from almost any pharmacy. You buy syringes there too, but you use U-100 syringes instead of the u-40 syringes used for Caninsulin. That was one thing I liked about the switch, the needles were narrower than the Caninsulin ones.
