I hope this post helps at least one person. That’s why I am writing it.
My gorgeous cat was diagnosed with diabetes in August 2025. Initially she was on Caninsulin starting at 2 units twice a day. Her weight still kept dropping and her water intake was out of control even though we increased her dose by one unit ( half twice a day ) each week.she went down from 5kgs to 3.7 . I then insisted they move her on to Prozinc. At the time she was on 5.5 units of caninsulin twice a day.,she started prozinc at two units twice a day. We increased at one unit each week .( half a unit twice daily ) . Her weight continued to decline but the pace slowed . Finally , after many months she stabilised at seven units twice a day .she stabilised after we added metacam once a day( non steroidal anti inflammatory ) to her medicines. The pain from the arthritis was preventing her from responding to the insulin .a few months later we started her on monthly injections of Solensia to help with her arthritis pain. After a couple of months from monitoring her clinical signs it became apparent we could reduce her insulin. We decreased at one unit each week and got her down to 5 units twice a day .continued on this dose for a few months. I explored surgery toremo e her pituitary tumour ( the acromegaly)and decided it would be too traumatic and risky for my baby girl. We then decided we had nothing to lose by trying her on cabergoline( it counters the effects of the excess growth hormone which causes insulin resistance and also pain from worsening arthritis caused by joints growing etc ). She responded brilliantly. We gradually reduced her insulin by one unit weekly . I am writing this for you as this is potentially the last week my baby will require insulin. As of today she is down to half a unit of insulin twice daily. All been well next Sunday she comes off the insulin. Dudes it’s a total miracle. She has started playing again with me and has much more energy . Her loving behaviour and cuddles have all returned .her hunger is not manic any longer . She weighs 4.7 which is a bit high and once she comes off the insulin I will reduce her food intake gradually until she gets to 4.4 kgs.she is sleeping much better and no longer screeches all night. She has started exploring the garden and hanging out watching life again . She is visibly enjoying her life again . I am so over the moon. She is such a champion . She did not give up.she tried her best as did I .Countless vet visits . Also wonderful email and phone support from the team at RVC as well as the most amazing support and care from my local vet . I prayed my sweetheart would stabilise so we could share a few more years tigether .right now things are looking promising. I adore my cat . After a full year it seems we have got her totally in remission . Bless you all and I hope this helps at least one other kitty in giving you some ideas as well an appreciation of how patience and perseverance can pay off . It’s taken a year . . Not sure as our focus has been on monitoring clinical symptoms rather than BG monitoring . Daily weight and water charts . Urine dipstick once a week to see if any glucose in urine and whether a lot or a little. Also monitor early hypo symptoms such as lethargy, staring into space , excessive howling . I have learnt to read poppy like a book. On occasion have done blood test at vet to check my conclusions and they are always backed up .
