Hey all! I know there are several people on here who are able to buy single pens at Costco. The one near me is saying it's impossible and the ONLY way he might consider selling a single pen is if pharmacies from other Costco locations will call him and confirm that they do this.

Is there anyone wiling to call their Costco pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to call this one for me today? The more who can, the better. I need more insulin, but the only way I can possibly afford to buy some is if I can get one pen. I was going to go with my friend who's a member tomorrow. The vials have gone up again (and in 7 months I only used about 1/4 of the one I have). We're barely hanging on and I hate to think I won't be able to care for Mikey because this Costco pharmacist is being a jerk. I looked at those discount cards you can print but when I calculate the cost of the vial, it's still $137.

The store in question is the one in Matthews, NC, and the pharmacy # is (704)321-7442

Thanks in advance!

I don't buy single pens at Costco, but I do buy them at Target. I know not all Target pharmacies are cooperative with this either, but maybe yours is...have you checked them out? Just a suggestion!

I've tried everywhere! As it is, to go to Costco I have to drive an hour, but I can't find anyone closer. The fact that pharmacies refuse to do so amazes me...what if I needed it for a child and that was all I could afford til payday? I can't believe they'd let someone go without insulin, but I guess for the almighty dollar, they don't care if someone dies.

I live in Las Vegas, a pretty big city, and I found ONE pharmacy that would sell a single pen....a Kmart pharmacy. The Kmart closest to my house won't sell a single pen, but the one further away will. The Targets and Costcos here won't sell single pens. Each individual pharmacy is allowed to make their own decisions as to whether they want to break a box open and sell a single pen. The only reason the Kmart pharmacy where I get Champ's insulin will sell me a single pen is because she has a human customer who's insurance will only pay for one pen per month so she already has open packs from which to sell me one. I asked her if I switched to Lev, would she sell me one pen and she said no, because she doesn't have another customer buying one at a time of that insulin. It can be very frustrating!!!

I've never been able to find a pharmacy that would sell single pens, but i think Christie and Willie in Kansas do get single pens from their Costco.

I think some people have found pens on Craig's list, either partially used or close to expiration. You could contact DCIN too, they may be able to get you a single pen. Have you checked the Supply closet Forum here on FDMB? There are sometimes pens available there.

Yes, if all else fails, get in touch with DCIN! They helped me out of a jam after our vet sent us home with repackaged Lantus.

I know I've read before that often the pharmacies inside hospitals will sell single pens. Have you tried any hospitals?

Re: A little OT..who buys single pens at Costco? Please hel

Not our local hospital, unfortunately. I can't find anywhere within an hour. I tried to find someone to split a pack, but no dice there, either. Thanks for all the suggestions, though.

ETA: I haven't tried the bigger hospitals down in Charlotte. Those are 45 minutes or so. I could try there, I guess. I sure wish those discount cards actually gave a discount on insulin...

I just can't help but think that maybe a fresh vial or pen might be what it takes to push Mikey OTJ, since he seems like he's trying to get close. The vial I have is almost 7 months old. Maybe that's not accurate thinking, but I keep thinking there must be SOME way to give him an extra push...

You may also want to consider Diamondback Drugs : http://www.diamondbackdrugs.com/

They are a Veterinary only pharmacy. They also service some of the major zoos in the country.

This is where I get my single pens and they ship anywhere in the United States. My cost for a single pen was $60 plus $5 for delivery. I live an hour away from them so I am sure your delivery charge would be a little higher. ;-)
