This morning's AMPS really surprised me! :blackeye:

We had a good day of nice numbers yesterday, with values that I would like to have all the time. Because I had not done a curve for a while, I don't know that we are normally in the yellows or especially the blues between shots (in fact, spotchecks suggest that we are not).

So after a day like yesterday, is the theory that his liver is releasing glucose to hit 503?!

Hmmm. The only thing I see is that last night the after shot number was higher than normal. But yesterday am the first test was higher too...... No chance last night's shot was a fur shot? If not, then maybe he went low last night and today is a bounce.

That's all I got, Cara. Hope today he gets back to normal ranges.

No, not a fur shot last nite.... I always always rub him where I injected, and then smell my fingers.
I have noticed that pretty frequently with him the first check is higher than the preshot value. Any significance to that? Seems like the insulin is "delayed onset", sometimes more delayed than others. He did come down a bit at +3 this morning (thank God!).

Yes, he was rising and above 150... So I looked back at his sheet and gave 1u. I will check him in three hours....and if necessary I will set an alarm tonight, but if I know him, he will be in the high 200s or low 300s in three hours ;)

Hey Cara - Be a little careful when you rub the area because sometimes, insulin can leak out of the syringe hole. I usually hold the tent just a few second longer and then if I am going to rub, I will massage away from the entry hole.
Wow! Thanks, Cindi... I would never have thought that because the gauge of the needle is so incredibly tiny. I'm hyper aware of this kind of thing when giving sub Q fluids to my CKD girl with an 18 gauge needle. Because those fluids can leak back out and I've experienced that. But it's a big hole.

OK… Maybe that has actually been happening? Maybe sometimes the insulin is coming back out. That would explain his erratic response to insulin, perhaps! Well I'm going to stop doing it immediately.

I have a question, though. After I release the tent on the side of his body I do rub right over the injection site and then I do smell for that characteristic odor. How can you be sure that it wasn't a fur shot unless you do that?

I typically just knew when I gave a fur shot. When I wasn't sure, there was nothing that I could do and if the numbers didn't go as low as I expected in his cycle, then that is a tell tale sign. So I just didn't rub the area.

You know what, Cindi? The last two times I've given his insulin I have not rubbed at all. In fact, now that I think about it while I'm (not) doing it… I realize that I was probably rubbing pretty good (hard).... lovingly mashing down on where I just injected. In my mind, I was helping with any sensation of the shot and sort of distributing the insulin SQ.

So starting today, I've just watched really carefully and smelled near his body… no more rubbing! :D

It will be SO COOL if this has an effect on him not having these unbudging flat plateaus versus him actually having a smile-shaped curve.
Can't wait to see...

Yesterday I took him in the car with me for the 2 hr ride to Chicago - that's where we are now He's doing okay - I still never know what he will eat or if he will eat - yesterday he started eating a food @Merlin told me about called Waggers - and I've been very pleased with his blood sugars. Tonight he isn't eating much though Yesterday I gave him an appetite stimulant and he really got the munchies - ate way more than he should have. But such as guilt trip - I made him hungry and then how can I withhold food? I so understand the roller coaster ride of these wild blood sugar swings Wynken is having - hope they smooth out for you, Cara

Well that all sounds pretty positive. I like that you have a new food that he enjoys and I totally understand your experience with the appetite stimulant. Although I've never had to use one with my sugar boy, I do have to give it every so often to my kidney disease kitty Andrea. She has been treated for hyperthyroid and has congestive heart failure or on top of the kidney disease, so she's a complete mess. And she doesn't always want to eat. By using mirtazipine I do get her to eat pretty well occasionally. But it also sort of wigs her out! And I feel bad about that.

Hugs to you & Murphy!
