I have a 12(?) yo male who has had crystals, and was treated for them. He's currently on Purina Pro Plan Focus (recently purchased), but is starting to turn his nose up at it. He did the same thing with the Friskies Special Diet one, too, hence the reason for the switch to the Purina Pro Plan.

I need to know what can I feed him in the wet food variety that isn't high in magnesium and phosphorous, and carbs? He needs to eat. I weigh him every morning, and he's lost a fair amount of weight in the past month.

I'm stuck, and desperate. Thank you.

I don't know the magnesium content on these, but these are all the canned low carb <10% and low phosphorus <250 from Dr. Lisa's list.

Shortcut shopping list <250 phosphorus. Adapted from Rhiannon & Shadow’s shortcut list
all values are from Dr. Pierson's updated list, September 2012

First - make food transitions gradual to reduce GI upset and to get the new flavor slowly introduced. Think of it like switching from whole milk to skim milk. Done all at once, folks often went "ICK". Done gradually, the switch might even be accomplished without noticing it much. (Parents are good at sneaking in food changes that way!)

Maybe try adding FortiFlora, warming it, and all the other ideas we have for inappetent cats (those not eating).

Thanks, ladies. I've tried warming the food, and that only lasted for so long. May have to get some Fortiflora and try that with him.

I thought that the phosphorous levels needed to be much lower than 200? Would the 250 phosphorous limit be the same for a UTI patient, or do you know?

I don't know what the phosphorus limit should be for a UTI patient. The shortcut list was at least a place for you to start looking for different foods.

I think the key to UTI issues is plenty of water in the diet. I make the wet food very soupy when Wink has a UTI and applesauce consistency every single meal. It usually takes about a week to clear the UTI, with or without antibiotics. The antibiotics made no difference but the cat shelter insisted on them.

Yes Hill's C/D and Purina One Urinary Tract formula cat foods have lower phosphorus and magnesium but I am not aware of any studies that show this is more beneficial than simply having plenty of water in the diet.

Thanks, Deb. I always provide water for them all, which is freshened twice a day. I'll be ordering the Fortiflora and his Special Diet food this morning. I need for him to eat and not lose anymore weight. Although he's maintaining just under 15 lbs. thankfully, but who knows when that'll change. Hopefully not.
