911: Virgil is hypo tonight

Our acro cat, Virgil, had a rough day. Woke up not wanting to eat and vomited 4 times. We gave him his insulin and took him to the vet. They gave him fluids and anti-nausea meds and determined NO ketones. They took blood, but the results for pancreatitis won't be back until tomorrow. He's acting much more like himself tonight, and he ate a little. No puking.

He was 358 PMPS (6pm), but then, before bed at 10pm, he was 61! HOLY CRAP!

We gave some karo on his gums, and he ate some high-carb dry food. He seems ok-- kind of normal for a guy who had a long day at the vet.

We tested him 25 minutes later, and he was 71.

Evenings tend to be his nadir, so we are nervous about going to bed. How long should we stay up and monitor? We got very little sleep this morning because he was sick and we are exhausted.

And should we reduce his dose tomorrow morning? He's on 12.5 of lantus. How much do we reduce??

Keep testing every half hour for a couple hours, or unless he soars really high. Best to give high carb wet food when you see this type of situation. Guidelines are in this Sticky Note in the Lantus forum; Don't Panic! or How to Handle Low Numbers

I would reduce back to 12.0 units. There's a good possibility he will be bouncing by morning if not sooner than that.

(I'm Wendy, too!) Thank you! We are trying not to give him lots of weird food because he started the day vomiting, and we don't yet know if he has pancreatitis. He did eat some high-carb kitten food (Merrick) and some high-carb dry food, but we don't want to push it. We've put karo on his gums twice. He tested 71 at 10pm and then 71 again 30 minutes later.

Testing now... and he's gone down to 63 again!!
