This morning, Ruckus was 150.....we gave .5 units.....at lunch he's 400.....

Can we give him .5 units again? We've always been told we can't do that, would like to know why? Please, can someone explain why we shouldn't/can't give him another .5 units?

Prozinc has a duration of 12 hours. The higher numbers you are seeing are most likely due to a "bounce" from the lower 186 this morning. When a kitty's numbers drop lower than the body is used to it releases "stored glucose" (glucogen) which causes the glucose numbers to rise. Adding more insulin to the mix could cause the numbers to bounce higher and for a longer period of time. It can take up to 3 days for the "bounce" numbers to drop back down.

What should we have given him this morning, that would have stopped the bounce?? And what should we do now with such a high number??

Hi Becky - I'm 'Elde Squeek' on fb. Bouncing is the liver's way of keeping him safe. Like Mary Ann said in her post, the liver releases glycogen when it thinks the bg is going too low. There's NOTHING you can do about a bounce and it's nothing YOU did to cause it. It also can't really be shot down with insulin so giving more just makes it worse - the liver will release even more giving you even higher numbers. A run of lower numbers or a steep dive off a high number triggers this. Pull up your patience pants and wait it out giving your normal dose. It really IS OK! I know we hate seeing those numbers. Dakota thinks he's a big rubber ball sometimes.

The 0.5 unit dose was appropriate for the AMPS number. When a kitty is diabetic it takes time for the body to re-adjust to being in normal numbers. The body get used to higher numbers and "thinks" that is where they should be, so it tries to keep the numbers in what it thinks is a "safe" number. A bounce just takes time to clear. I will tag @Sue and Oliver (GA) to see if she can offer more advice on the dosing

ETA I see Ruby and Lyresa are here. They can certainly give you some good information,

He really has some nice numbers and is gradually dropping. I agree it is possible that he bounced from a low number last night. That was a nice pre shot and if he was only at186 this am, he might have dropped overnight.

That said, it is only one number, only one cycle. In general you are seeing more yellows and blues. Maybe this weekend get a curve and see how the one unit is working mid cycle.
