911 46 and going down

Julie had a dose of 0.5 Lantis tonight at 9:30 PM EDT. My Libre 2 went off at 3 AM and I tested her and her BG is 46. She just ate about a quarter cup of high carb food with treats and honey-covered treats. No actual symptoms of distress. I have been having trouble giving her insulin and I had a tech come over tonight who apparently did it properly! I’m just going to watch her and check her again in about 10 minutes.

How long after the insulin shot was the 46 on the Libre? 5.5 hours? Has her blood sugar come up after the high carb food & honey?

It happened 5 1/2 hours after the insulin. She has eaten a lot and seems absolutely fine. I cannot retest her glucose because the libre is giving me an error message telling me I have to try again in 10 minutes. We have to be at the vet in about five hours to get it replaced but this does happen periodically where it just shuts down and doesn’t work. I don’t have a backup manual system unfortunately and have been relying on it for the last two weeks. In general it’s been good but right now is not a good moment for it to be acting up!!! I think Jolie is going to be OK - she ate a huge meal just now but obviously I’m not gonna go back to sleep ).

In my recent experience on the board, I have found that once the BGs drop under 100, the libre sensors become unreliable and when the CG tests with a human meter the BG is not as low as the sensor is saying. Also they have had those messages saying….test in 10 minutes. I think it would be wise to get a manual human meter to use when the BGs are low on the sensor to check that they really are low. Or do the change over to a manual meter entirely.

Thank you for your reply!! That is a drag that Libre becomes unreliable. I have not done an ear prick in 20 years and have to get some supplies I guess. The bigger problem is that I’m even having trouble giving her insulin shots because she’s so sensitive to the needle. I had to have a tech come over last night to do the shot and I guess she did a good job…. . I think Jolie is going to be fine tonight. Her BG is now showing at 125.

I second that about the Libre readings being unreliable in the lower numbers. In another member’s cat just recently, the ear prick blood test with a human meter confirmed higher numbers than the Libre sensor was indicating. It’s very important to have a reliable method for reading BG as you know.
