Re: 9-7 Gus AMPS 103

Gus is looking super duper!!! Sometimes I have to remind myself this is the same Gus who lived in the nosebleed section on a daily basis. How far he's come!!!

I know that some adenomas will change the amount of hormone they secrete. Can anyone explain to me exactly what's happening here. This is probably just part of the 'acro ride', I'll bet. I've been thinking about the vet putting Gus on yet another AB. No one mentioned white blood cell count, only micro blood in the urine. Blood, by itself, isn't indicative of infection. If his WBC is normal, he shouldn't be throwing AB at Gus. I have a call in for him tomorrow because he was off today. I don't want to come off as a know it all. I read an archived post on FDMB from a member who was a vet. She was venting about her colleagues who continued to treat microscopic hematuria with AB, even in the absence of a high WBC. She called it 'sterile cystitis' or something close to that. It's cause is uncertain. I just think I should ask. I don't want Gus to become AB resistant and then not be able to be helped by AB if he really needs it. Any opinions.

i have seen comments like that too. in general, i think the recommendation is to do the sterile urine withdraw via a syringe - is it called a C & S, maybe? and to culture it to see if there is bacteria there. if there isn't bacteria, there isn't an infection. no infection = no need for antibiotics.

have they done a sterile urine draw and cultured it? if not, i'd probably insist on that before any more antibiotics.

The vet that usually have, has done 2 needle sticks. His colleague did the last one by expressing the bladder. Good point.
