(its all in his SS too)

He's been on one unit for 10 days now and I guess this morning's 191 means he's STILL bouncing??

He did let out a wail around 5am this morning that I interpreted as an "I have to puke" wail. he jumped off the bed and crouched for a little while, did NOT puke, then got back on the bed, cuddled up and started purring again. I started thinking I should test him after that wail and then promptly fell back asleep ohmygod_smile It did get me wondering how hair balls affect the whole blood sugar thing though. I imagine they may stall or delay digestion from time to time (assuming the hairball and food are not puked up.)

I was thinking of doing a curve (or mini curve) tomorrow but in light of this recent dip is it better to wait a few more days until his numbers even out again?

Between now and curve time, try to use the other ear once or twice. If need be, maybe go for a mini curve this time, as long as you keep getting that +2 at night. The key is to have evidence of what his numbers are the entire cycle. If you always get that before bed test @+2, then you already know what he's doing @+2. You can kinda ignore that one at curve time. Maybe go for +3,+6.+9 this time and give yourself a couple weeks more practice with the stubborn ear before you attempt a full curve. Think that would be easier for you? Probably less stressful for both you and Crushy.

Thanks Debbie! good advice.

You'd be amazed what can effect their BG's. Hairballs being only one of them. Hairballs, vomiting, constipation, nausea, spat with another cat, ANY kind of stress including going to the vet. It is recommended that you do the curves at home in order to get a truer reading. Curves at the vet will almost always be much higher because of the stress of being there. Unless you have a cat that loves to ride, loves the vet, etc, the vet will not get an accurate reading. My Lucian hates the carrier, hates to ride, hates the vet or going anywhere, so of course he's gonna be sky high at the vet's but fine at home

That 191 looks nice. As we call it 'Playin' in the water'. He's in good company today. :thumbup

Rarely do our cats run as low as we'd like, take your blessings where you get them. I'd love for Lucian to stay between 60-100, but he doesn't. As long as he's under renal threshold, I'm happy, because there is much less chance of organ damage. If you don't know, renal threshold is about 250. There is some argument about the actual numbers. Some say 250, some say 280. If either of these is right, then under 250 is a good target. ;-) As long as he's in the 'water' or low 'sunshine' then I know he's good. :thumbup Getting into the grass (below 100) is always a plus as long as it's not TOO low. :-D

Seriously, there is only so much you can do, the rest is up to the cats metabolism. Unlike humans, a cats pancreas has the ability to heal and begin producing insulin again, so there is always a chance of them being diet controlled and going OTJ (Off The Juice or off insulin). Many do, many don't, but most of it is the cat, all you can do is your best at his treatment to give him what he needs and increase his possibility of going OTJ. If you do all you can and he doesn't go OTJ, it certainly doesn't make you a failure. Some cats go OTJ in a couple weeks of beginning treatment, some take months or years and some never do. Giving your cat the proper treatment is giving him the chance of a healthy and happy life, whether he goes OTJ or not is irrelevent.

Now that I wrote a book and threw in a little philosophy, I'll quit.

Re: 9/5 Crushy pmps 355 +2 335 amps 191 (9/6 bouncing AGAIN)

Thanks Debbie.

Im starting to get that there really is only so much I can do. I mean, this cat has been raw fed for the last 10 years and he STILL got diabetes? Im thinking there really is a LOT about this disease we just dont know (in people AND cats.) All I can do is the best I can do. I really want him to go OTJ, but healthy and managed would be ok too.

That being said, he bounced majorly from the 191 reading yesterday morning.

Is there any point in doing a curve today if he's still coming down from the bounce?

He has been on 1 unit for 11 days now and still bouncing.

Thanks
Michele
