Morning and not too bad a bg considering I was feeding FF Turkey & Giblets. Maggie seems okay today, after having an upset tummy the last two days. My question -- is the Pepcid A/C okay to give her 1/4 tablet the next time this happens. It has 10 mg. I've never had to give Pepcid to her in the past? I know there are different types of Pepcids is the reason I ask? As long as she's eating today, I won't give it to her, but for future reference I'll know it's okay. Ella mentioned something about some kitties having a reaction to beef flavors, and I'm beginning to think so for Maggie, as she didn't care for the FF Beef or Beef & Liver. The Merrick BG 6 Beef is the one she vomited and also another Special Kitty that had beef. For now I am going to stick to FF Seafood Feast, and also the FF Turkey & Giblets, although it does spike her bg. She's okay with chicken, and I'll start boiled chicken, too! I'll ask the Vet about adding binders to her food the next six month senior check-up, which is coming up soon. So far trying to get her on something suitable for renal disease is not working. Hope everyone has a nice Friday. Sending positive vines for all kitties not feeling well today.

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168 -- Question on Pepcid ATrak

Good morning! Looking good Miss Maggie!

I have no idea on the pepcid. We haven't given it. Tarragon doesn't like beef anything. He will eat it if I mix it with chicken or seafood, but doesn't like it on it's own.

Have a wonderful day!

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168 -- Question on Pepcid ATrak

Good Morning Ann!

Sorry to hear about Maggies Tummy troubles. Jetta gets 1/4 tab of Pepcid somrtimes twice a day, just make sure it's the orgiginal strength, 10 mg.

I read an update that the 2011 formula of Turkey and giblets is 7% carbs. I was feeding it regularly until I read that and now I use it an MC food when needed. Good luck with your beef issues and have a great day.

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168 -- Question on Pepcid ATrak

Thanks Jaclyn, It does say "Original Strength" at the top and is 10 mg, but it is labeled "Pepcid AC". Is there another just regular Pepcid? I originally bought this for myself some time ago.

Oh wow, the 2011 formula of Turkey and Giblets is 7% carbs!! No wonder the new formula causes a spike and no wonder our kitties love, as anything with carbs is what Maggie loves. Thanks for that info. The FF chicken Feast also causes a rise in Mags.

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168 -- Question on Pepcid

There is an extra strength Pepsid AC. You want the 10mg tablet. You can give 2.5mg (1/4 tablet) twice a day.

Gabby can't tolerate beef flavors. Beef and fish are the two types of food that many cats can develop allergies to.

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168 -- Question on Pepcid

Thanks Sienne for that info on the Extra Strength Pepcid. I think I will go ahead and give her a dose this morning. She's eating but is quiet today. That's interesting with Gabby not tolerating beef or fish. So far the fish seems okay with Mags.

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168 ATrak

Nice blue for Maggie, but I am sending tummy healing vines to her today!!
Never had to give Moonie anything(antijinx) and she eats like a horse   Loves FF beef & FF chicken.
She used to like Tukey & Giblets, but maybe I will try again now knowing that it is 7%
Hope the pepcid works for her, no one likes a tummy ache--Hugs & Lub from us!!!

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168 ATrak

I wonder where those extra 4% of carbs in FF T&G come from? The ingredients listed on the label do not appear to be ones that would contribute carbs. How mysterious! (it used to be considered a 3% carbs food and now it is 7%?). Whatever. What are giblets, anyway? Would one type of giblet have more carbs than another? For example, the gizzard might have more than the liver or the heart??? Maybe they changed the proportion of the different types of giblets? I have always noticed that FF T&G tends to raise Rusty's bg, but he loves it so that I feed a teaspoon of it as a bedtime snack and take my chances.

I hope the 1/4 of a table of a Pepcid A/C helps Maggie. I bought some Pepcid A/C for emergencies, but have never had to use it.

Have a great day,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168; +3 120 ATrak

+3 120

Thanks Roni for the tummy vines. Glad Moonie likes to eat like a horse.

Hi Ella, yes, I am surprised, too, that the new formula FF T&G has 7 carbs vs. the old formula having 3 carbs. Once they changed the label and formula, some of the FF our kitties could eat now seem to have more carbs. I'm not sure either where the extra carbs are coming from!!

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168; +3 120; +4 124; +8 187 ATrak

+8 187

Well, I had to leave for several hours and left her some lc FF, but she only touched a little, so I'm surprised she's so high unless she just ate before I came home. Since she wasn't eating, I also spoiled her a little with her favorite Gerber chicken & gravy bf, but not even a tsp. She does much better on the Beechnut chicken & broth. I think she'll come down before pmps.

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168; +3 120; +4 124; +8 187 ATrak

Simon's bg also spikes with the FF turkey and giblets...now I guess I know why! Whenever he eats beef or liver, he usually throws up so I know his tummy is sensitive to the beef.

I give Simon and Cleo 1/4 pepcid and they have done pretty well on it. I buy the generic brand at CVS -- regular strength. Because Cleo has CRF, I usually give her a pecid at least every other day.

Good luck and hope Maggie comes down a little for you tonight.

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168; +3 120; +4 124; +8 187; PMPS 165 A

Where did you guys find it was 7%. We all knew that FF T&G seemed to spike our cats but it was supposed to be low carb. The special kitty T&G is a favourite here with Victoria and Heff. Heff tested at 50 yesterday for his monthly BG reading.

Also you should look into whether to add boiled chicken. I think with some kidney diseases you want to keep protein low and adding pure chicken might not be ideal.

Give Maggie a belly rub from me.

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168; +3 120; +4 124; +8 187; PMPS 165 A

Hi Karrie, that was from Jaclyn above of Jacspets. Someone else here also did a search or called Purina and found the FF T&G to be 7% carbs. Unfortunately, when the formula was changed a while back, it affected the Salmon Feast I remember, too. I read something, too, on Tanya CRF website about some of the FF. Some kitties aren't that affected by it, but Mags is really carb sensitive. Ella feeds it to Rusty just as a bedtime snack, and he's okay with just a little.
Yes, thanks, someone else here mentioned about the boiled chicken, and I bought some today and will start her on it. I just bought one of SK turkey & giblets and thought I'd see how Maggie does on it. One belly rub coming up for Maggie.
Wow, way to go with Heff testing at 50. When are we going to see more pics of your family?

Re: 9/30 Maggie AMPS 168; +3 120; +4 124; +8 187; PMPS 165 A

Read up on chicken on tanya's CRF site. I know in dogs its not good to give a lot of protein if the dog with kidney issues is throwing protein in the urine. I haven't read up on this in cats. Maverick was diagnosed at stage 2a or b right before he left so we didn't get that far. So if Maggie has kidney issues you should find out if the extra protein is okay for her or not. Thank you for the info on FF. Makes so much sense now. I'll be watching to see how she likes the SK    Thanks for passing on the belly rubs.

I've been under the weather and still more tired than I was before I got sick. I'll try and make a point on Sunday to get updated pics of them and share. They are all wonderful and I'm very lucky to have each one of them. I couldn't ask for more. I have to tell you about a comment that DH made the other night ohmygod_smile

Hi Karrie, thanks so much. Yes, it's Stage 2 kidney disease for Maggie and I'm looking thru Tanya's website. I'll be talking to the Vet more at her soon to be 6 month check-up. I'm so sorry you're still sick and not over it. It's hanging on a long time. Those are three lucky kitties, and I know they are all grateful to have a home and so nice they get along with your dog. Can't wait to see their pics and what DH says. Give them all some scritches and belly rubs from us.

Fingers and paws crossed that Miss Maggie is feeling better this evening. Willie can't tolerate beef foods either... we're going to be switching from raw to canned here in a bit at least until Christmas when I can restock our freezer with free venison. trying to get Willie used to eating BG turkey again... he's not loving me! I may have to do some creative cat food mixology!

Maggie's numbers look great tonight... hope you're having a great evening as well!

Hope the pepcid works for Maggie. Do you use pill pockets or the gullet method? I've never had to pill Smokey but I'm curious as to how others go about it.

Hi Ann, we gave Zener pepcid ac regular strength today for the first time - 1/4 of the 10mg tablet. I was able to cut the tablet into 1/4s fairly easily with a sharp paring knife. We have a little pill gun thing to get the pill in his throat, first cover the pills in butter then down the hatch, usually give him a little bit of freeze dried chicken with lots of water after, so it isn't a dry pill. He was having a lot of rumbling and burpy-like action this morning and acted interested in eating but then would just stare at the food, so we tried the pepcid. He seems to be eating much better tonight so we just did not give another 1/2 pill tonight. Hope Maggie's tummy is feeling better soon and you too!
