Good MORNING!

Yesterday was an AMAZING surf (right until the end, that is!) Wow - the last couple of days, with all the drama of a sudden 2am wild ride with emergency stops for barf and poopie accidents, and of a brand new granddaughter....he has nice curves! @-)

He had settled into my son's house after a day and after another day got bored and escaped the guest room a few times, but never got further from the stairs because of the big DOG who sleeps on one of the risers. After a day or so, all 5 Ps in place. Good boy!

This morning was the "come home" trip to my apartment. I got Cerenia in him this morning and he only ate half his first breakfast. I'd planned to put him on the road at +1, but my new granddaughter came down so Leo was stuck in his cage in the room for about 45 min by himself. Well, I hadn't planned that, but thought maybe it would get him calmer for the trip. HOWEVER, when I went up to get him, he had tossed the cage. His cushion with all the pee pads nicely tucked all the way around - a crumpled up mess of paper and cushion. I think the actual carrier might have moved. Oh poor Leo! So out to the car we went, and I let him out to offer the litterbox and straighten out his carrier. He wandered around looking out the window, and maybe that calmed him down to see outside (he can't inside the carrier). After about 30 minutes on the road, the little mews stopped and he settled down into a position that looked like he was nauseous, but then he sat down with his head up and stayed like that the rest of the trip. I went a different route that wasn't so curvy and hilly. We got home about 45 minutes ago and he's calm, has eaten a bit, and preened. We will be fine.

However, he threw a surprise 430 AMPS. I figured we be safe for the trip because his stress would keep his BG high even though he didn't really eat. And here we are at home, 2 hours before nadir, at 142. Should be an interesting cycle.

Question ... was it a bad thought that only a little food AMPS and getting on the road would be ok (rather than all his morning food) because stress would help keep him high? The trip was between +2.5 and +4. I'd hope to drive between +1.5 and +3 to get him home for more food sooner.

Re: 9/30 Leo AMPS 430 +4 143 successful car ride!

I'm glad your car ride home went better.

I can't really answer your question, since ECID, but I think since the ride was delayed and if it was my cat, I would have offered him a bit of food on the ride home. But I know J.D. will eat on the ride, after about an hour of traveling.

Get a +5. He's coming down pretty quick. Enjoy your calm down time, after all that drama.

Re: 9/30 Leo AMPS 430 +4 143 +5 168 +6 178 successful car ri

Hi Dyana

+5 = 168
+6 = 178

He's back to surfing .. amazing! Hopefully he won't do a late cycle drop, but he ate later than normally, so I don't think so, but will still check again later, perhaps +9.

I'm tired, but going to make myself go out for a run. Otherwise I will continue to feel like a slug all day. Then I will come back and be a slug and watch a movie or something with my little trooper!

Thanks,
Lisa

Hi Lisa, so glad Leo survived the ride home and what a nice recovery. He's evidently very happy to be home.
Leo, are you okay? Mags

Hi Lisa....I'm so glad the ride home was better than the trip there. And nice numbers too. :-D
Hope you got your run in, and it energized you.

Hi Ann - yes he is. Curled up on his throne until some thunder sounded a bit ago, so back under the bed in a hunched little ball.

Sorry Maggie dear, I's a-skeered of the BOOM BOOMers and can't come over now 'cause it's dark and raining. I'll come over, later, k?

HI Barb - I did get a run in. Guilted myself into it, I REALLY didn't want to. And screwed up and ran further than I had intended to, and faster than I thought I was (maybe baby happy?!?) and now I'm EXHAUSTED!!!! But in a good way. Don't want to go to sleep yet, so ~O) ~O) ~O) Thanks for asking!

Re: 9/30 Leo AMPS 430 +4 143 +6 178 + 9 371 successful car r

Like Dyana said, it's hard to know if the drop is due to the lack of food or if Leo brought himself down. I don't know that I'd be comfortable relying on stress to keep numbers high.

PMPS stinking 491 What-up, Leo?

@Dyana - he refused to eat the first time I brought him down, but that was his first ride, and he'd already thrown up. And before Cerenia. So I'll try to offer something after an hour. He did settle down into what I can only call a "zone" for the rest of the trip. Thanks for the suggestion.

@Sienne - based on his numbers this evening, it's evident that he's had a tough day. I'll try Dyana's suggestion. Today wasn't planned very well. Well, I DID plan to leave later after he had food in him, with some digestion time. But visiting doesn't always allow exact planning!

We'll be traveling back to NJ on Thursday late afternoon, so all the food drama won't apply. I'll still use the Cerenia though. The vet said it lasts for 24 hours ... so I plan to give it to him in the morning (oh I forgot ... I have to work his shot time earlier by 2 hours this week for a Thursday morning meeting ohmygod_smile ) ... so that means I'll have to shoot him DURING the drive home. Oh boy. Or I delay my commute until after shot time and some food and drive home at night.

Have you ever had to shoot during a trip?

Oh, now some planning and dilemma to ponder. @-) ~O) @-) ~O)

Hi Lisa,
Congrats on a pretty good trip with Leo, and congrats on your new granddaughter!

When we drive to NYC (6+ hours) with Rusty we try to leave 2- 2 1/2 hours after his AMPS and breakfast. I give him about half the amount of food that I normally would. I do give him a full dose of insulin. He almost always throws up immediately upon getting into the car (nerves?), but since he has eaten at least 2 hours before, there isn't usually much vomit. Rusty will not eat on the trip, even though his favorite food is offered at rest stops. The trips always cause his bg to rise, but usually this rise is gradual, over several days. It is confounding! Upon arriving home after a trip it takes forever to get him back on track. But ECID. You will learn how Leo reacts as you do more trips. Stu never had such long-lived rises in bg, and he did the same trip.

Welcome home!

Yes, on an airplane it's pretty impossible, but during a car trip, you can pull over and get everything out (glucometer, strips, syringe, insulin, and treat) shoot, and then put it all back. Will you be moving his shot time up again by 2 hours, after Thursday? I know he'll be stressed and everything (but not as much as last time ;-) ) but maybe you could start the moving of the shot time up on that evening, and just make it home by 30 minutes late, or something.

By the way, my cats pretty much scream (well Ginger screams, and J.D. cries) on the way there, and are pretty darn quiet on the way home, like they know they are going home. Maybe that's why Leo was more in the zone yesterday on his ride back to your apartment.

HI Ella. Yeah, the barf thing concerned me, but I couldn't get any more food into him. I will offer during stops, and maybe he'll get used to it. What kind of carrier do you use? I have a regular, larger sized hard sided carrier and I was looking online for something more open, or like a dog crate so he has more room (perhaps vertically) and more visibility.

Dyana - LOL my Molly screams all the way to the specialist who is over an hour away. I don't take her longer. She wails @-) @-) @-) I wish i could explain what's happening! She's (a bit) quieter on the way home, but I think only because she's exhausted. Maybe it was that way for Leo, but we'll see. Also - same question to you about the type of carrier you use.

Yes, I'll start moving his shot time back to his normal time. on Thursday I'll shoot at 5:30 am. I could move the shot Thursday PM like you said, but I couldn't get on the road for another hour or so due to rush hours. That's the "go home at high" option but has the higher probability of barf. I can leave about 3:30pm and stop at 5:50ish, shoot, and be home by 8ish. That's the other option. Dilemma.

Thank you both for suggestions!
