Sorry its been a few days since we did an update. Have a kidney infection and other health issues going on so havent been feeling too good. Using what little energy I had to take care of my Jupe baby.

Jupiters appetite is on and off. Sometimes he will eat and sometimes not. When his appy is bad I do give him a little bit of max cal and for some reason, he seems to like it. He usually eats a little bit of that.

He is getting around okay. He still isnt able to jump onto his perch in the window. He does however get help going up there :-D

Last night, a noise woke me up and I looked over to see Jupiter clawing his way up the side of the couch!! He went and laid on the top of the couch so I put a chair there for when he was ready to come down and he jumped on the chair then the coffee table and then in bed with me.

Jupiters first chemo treatment is scheduled for Monday October 7th. (Thank you so much Sherry&Squirt) Still not sure how it will be possible for me to get him all of his chemo treatments but trying to take things one at a time. We should be getting the bloodwork done on Friday so the results can be sent to his oncologist.

I am really nervous about chemo.... but I know its the best thing for Jupiter.

Vines to all kitties in need today.

Hope you are all doing well. Have a great day!

Re: 9/30 Jupiter

Yea that Jupe is getting around!! :-D Sorry about your health stuff - must make it that much harder to care for Jupe.

Sorry if you mentioned it before, but how many chemo treatments does Jupe need? And how much time will there be between treatments?

Hugs to you and Jupe!

Re: 9/30 Jupiter

It's good to hear Jupiter is feeling so good he's trying to climb things. I'm sorry you've been so sick. Sending prayers for you to feel better and for Jupiter and his chemo. Try not to worry so much. Things will work out and Jupiter will continue to get better.

Re: 9/30 Jupiter

Great progress report on Jupiter! See he is going to get used to the changes. Paws crossed for the chemo treatments, and yes it all will work out.

What I am hoping to see is that as he becomes more active and is able to get around better, that his appy will increase.

No more crappy appy, Jupe! Eat for your momma bean!

Re: 9/30 Jupiter

You might try some gentle play that encourages him to reach a little. It may help him learn to use his adjusted body, plus trigger the hunt, catch, kill, eat behavior cycle.

YES!!! This is so what I am hoping for too!!!!

Thanks BJM for the suggestion I am going to try that!!!

Thank you Carla, Ann, Carl, BJM & Linda for the visits! I appreciate it so much!

Re: 9/30 Jupiter

Hi Jamie,
Jupiter is improving so much. Now if he can recover his appetite he'll be well on the road to recovery. It's great that he can get around so well. I know how apprehensive you are about the chemo treatments, but if they give Jupe a good chance at a healthy life, they are worth it.

Sending positive thoughts for Jupe and his treatments and healing vines for you both,

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 9/30 Jupiter

HI Jamie,

So happy to hear that Jupiter is getting around better! It must be amazing to watch as he improves and discovers new ways of doing things. Sending positive vines for Jupe and for you to feel better too.

Re: 9/30 Jupiter

I am nervous about chemo... but not too worried because I know the chemo is the best thing for him. I just have no idea how I will be able to afford the chemo treatments. However, his chemo is scheduled on Monday and I know 1 treatment is a great start.

Everyone says dont worry but for me.... thatd be impossible!

Jupiter has been a champ so far and I am really looking forward to the first chemo treatment and Jupiter showing that chemo who is boss!!!

And yes it is truly amazing the progress he has made! Hes smart and learning new ways to do things and hes stubborn so if he wants to lay somewhere he will figure out a way to get there.... or he will sit there and meow  and I will make sure he gets to where he wants!

Thank you Ella and Jane for the visits!!!

Re: 9/30 Jupiter

Yay for Jupiter feeling better and getting around with and without your help! :-D :-D :-D
I love what you said above about Jupe being a champ ~ it's so true!! And you are, too :-D
I hope you feel better soon, ((Jamie)).

Re: 9/30 Jupiter

10/1 UPDATE

10/1 UPDATE

I have great news!!!!!!!!! I dont want to jinx this... but.... Jupiters appy is improving!!!!!! He ate a fair amount of food overnight last night and this morning!!!!! His appy could still probably use some more improving... but this is a great start!!!! I hope his improving appy continues!!!!!! :-D

I am going to have to eventually try to get a wider scratching pad. Hes scratching his cardboard scratch pad but its a really skinny one and he tries to sit on it and scratch his front paws but he keeps falling over and getting VERY upset. He even yelped a few times!

I tried helping him stay up but he doesnt like help. I feel so so so bad though. He wants to scratch and he is scratching all the carpets... because he can lay on the carpet and scratch infront of him.... So I think with a wider scratch that he wont fall over when sitting on it... he will be able to scratch and hold himself up. We cant afford anything extra right now but I will have to put a wider scratch pad on my 'eventually to get' list.

Jupiter woke me up a LOT last night... I think one time he woke me up just so I could watch him eat... :-D He must be proud of himself. He also stood infront of the couch and meowed... and at another point during the night he stood and meowed at his perch.

Hes still have a really difficult time jumping at all... and climbing. I am trying to teach him to jump on something lower first and then on the perch... but he wont do that... I tried to give him treats while showing him to jump on something lower to get to something higher. He doesnt like that hes not able to jump and go to the places he wants to lay. Makes me feel really bad.

Great news on the happy appy! I don't think I would want to eat much after going through all he's been through either. I guess maybe he just needed a lil more time. He must feel weird not being able to do his normal cat stuff, but I'm sure he'll work it out. I see ramps or maybe little steps in your future...

Check behind grocery/appliance stores for large cardboard packing boxes; he can scratch to his heart's content while lying on a big one.

my cats love the inclined scratchers:

and they also use it as a ramp to get up on the sofa.

That' great Jupiter's appy is better. I know it's frustrating for him right now (and you too) for Jupiter to not be able to do everything he used to do, but he'll learn new ways. It just takes time.

He tried scratching the cardboard scratching pad again and he got really upset and was meowing and yelping. I went over to him and tried to help him and he growled at me... then just looked at me and I could see how frustrated he was.

I bawled.

I really dont like seeing him so upset! He never growls

I am not sure if I should try helping him or not.... sometimes he acts like he needs the help and acts like he appreciates it but other times it seems to upset him pretty bad when I try to help because hes frustrated and wants to do it himself

What about getting some long cardboard chunks from an appliance store or grocery (check in the back, behind the store)

Then maybe he'd be able to stretch as he needed and his weight would hold it in place.

We have a ton of cardboard boxes here and I gave him one for him to lay on... he likes laying on it but doesnt like to scratch it... my other kitty... we always keep a box or two out for her to scratch because she enjoys scratching them but Jupe doesnt...

He seems to like scratching the one carpet... but he still keeps going to his scratcher pad and trying to do it there...

Jamie,
Lucy LOVES to scratch on my travel suitcase, so I gave it to her eventually.
You know the suitcase with a pull-up handle on top and casters on the bottom?
Not the metalic plastic kind, but the soft kind made of canvas-like fabric.
She never uses any of the scratching posts or boards, but she loves the suitcase.
I think she likes how the strong canvasy fabric feels on her claws, I think her claws get caught in the fabric just the right way.
Lucy loves her suitcase flat on the floor or standing up.
When flat on the floor, she sits on it or scratches her claws like scratching on a carpet.
When standing up, she uses it like a scratching post. (I just have to make sure it won't fall over her by making it bottom heavy, easy, it's a suitcase.)
It's the biggest one, so even a big cat can lounge on top, when not scratching.

Can you finagle a way to anchor the scratch pad so it won't move? Maybe attach to larger cardboard that he'd have to be on to use it??

Hi guys .. just getting caught up on jupe's progress .. so happy to hear his appy is improving! I would be the same as you, worried about the chemo, but it is the best thing for him so remember that .. ((hugs)) I am sure jupe is not mad at you when he growls, he is just a little confused trying to figure out what he can and cannot do, yet, so just give him time and space if he wants/needs it ..
