Hi LL,

First day back at TBP. Le sigh. September's going to be horrid at work. I'm already stressing about it big time.

This morning we had major drama. We had a plastic bag monster break into the house and terrify all of the cats at about 6:00 AM. We're pretty diligent about ensuring that plastic bags aren't left laying around, but we left one sitting on a table last night after doing some shopping late in the evening. One of the civilians got himself stuck in the bag, freaked out, and then ran screaming through the house trying to escape his captor. All feline witnesses were totally freaked out. DH and I were also freaked out. After about 30 seconds of the plastic bag monster terrorizing everyone, the civilian was captured and set free unscathed. Everyone except our fraidy-cat civilian has forgotten the incident already. Miss Princess keeps creeping around alert for any signs of the plastic bag monster.

Eddie's cycle was bizarre last night. He dropped 100 points to +1, which would really be too soon for onset, so it must have been a bounce clear. I fed 18%, which is more or less the same carb. % I've fed routinely in the past to slow cliff drops, but he came to a halt and didn't budge down any further for the rest of the night. I'm not sure what to make of it.

I've been reading more stuff, and ran across a new research article about insulin resistance caused by the administration of glargine in healthy mice. Interesting read and something I think we do have to consider when we are increasing doses. I haven't seen this linked to elsewhere on the board. Here's the link to the full text: Exposure to excess insulin (glargine) induces type 2 diabetes mellitus in mice fed on a chow diet. I'm very curious to see what others think of the findings here.

Prayers and vines to all in need today.

Eddie - time to pull the cord! :o

Sorry to say that I had to laugh at the plastic bag intruder story.

I had to laugh as well. I've read about insulin resistance too but they say it is rare in cats.

I haven't had a chance to read the article yet - too busy laughing at the plastic bag monster.   Our Freddie (GA) once got the handle of the plastic bag stuck around her neck - at night, of course. Unfortunately, the bag still had a canister of coffee in it. That was some of the most terrifying thumping I've ever heard in my life. I think she ran through every single room in the house, at least 15 times, trying to escape. It took forever for me to catch her and slay the monster. And Jerz actually thought about waking up the plastic bag monster last night, too. Fortunately, she decided to just take a peak and then let the monster sleep.

Looks like bounce-breaking might be in progress. Paws are crossed for a gentle slide!

Hi Wendy!

Thanks for the picture. That made me crack up. I also realized I wrote his PMPS wrong...he dropped 100 points from +1 to +2. Tonight, I'm trying something a little different for steering. Rather than filling Eddie up with tons of carbs, I'm going to see what happens if I stick with his regular LC food at PMPS, +1, +2, and +3 and only intervene if it looks like he's going to dip below 50.

Hi Elise!

Thanks for stopping by. I think you might be referring to IAA (insulin autoantibodies) which several of our kitties have. I don't know how common or rare that is, but as I understand it, that's a specific condition where the body basically attacks the insulin as a foreign substance.

"Generic" insulin resistance on the other hand is what diabetes is - a relative lack of insulin and non-responsiveness of receptor cells to the regulatory effect of insulin.

OMG, that plastic bag monster story is soooo funny! I can just picture the big eyes of the terrified onlookers as the poor victim tried to escape the monster's jaws.     Thank goodness the beans were able to come to the rescue!

I hope Eddie is clearing the bounce and has a nice, safe slide tonight. No need to be dramatic, Eddie. Mama bean does have to work tomorrow!

Guilty as charged. If that article applies, maybe we shouldn't be using carbs to keep the insulin up and the numbers down? I'm too tired to try to read the article but will later.

I hope Eddie continues his obvious bounce clearing a little more gently now!! Listening Eddie?

Hi Elise...that's what I'm wondering too. If nothing else, something to chew on. It's the first animal study I've run across specifically looking at overdosing glargine, and the role that excess insulin plays in creating or worsening insulin resistance. It's kind of a chicken or egg situation, I think.

Hi Shelly and Tricia!

I was actually pretty terrified of the plastic bag monster as well. I was still asleep and I heard crashing and a lot of cursing coming from DH in the living room and all of a sudden this screeching, hissing, plastic bag with a black and white demon inside with claws everywhere came blasting into the bedroom. DH hollered at me to catch him, and I was like, "H*ll no! I'm not touching him!" I covered my head up with the blankets as the plastic bag monster roared over the bed, so it wouldn't rip my face off. After about 30 seconds of blasting, the plastic bag monster stopped long enough for DH to catch him and free the kitty trapped inside. There were puffed up tails everywhere!
