Yesterday's Condo

Senor Furrypurry continues to be his awesome little self. Lots of outside time yesterday, not so much today as I am off to tbp. Should be bts, but ended up researching a couple running a farm that turns out to be a fraud. They've been showing up to farmer's markets and running a CSA when it turns out they haven't grown anything at all this year. Particularly appalling is that they were claiming all of their production was organic (unfortunately, not certified, so not sure my USDA peeps will have a way to get involved as they don't appear to be participating in our programs either). They were busted because two of the farmers that run one of the local markets decided to drop in on their farm after growing suspicious of the variety/quantities/consistent quality of what they were bringing to the market each week.

Crossing my fingers that my ADW shipment gets here today... getting low on strips and 1/2u syringes (been using up old BD ones with 1u markings as we've been sitting at 1u for awhile now). Would like to not have to make a walmart run for those if not needed.

2 day sale at ADW... PET922 will get you 10% off any order! Of course, I placed my order LAST week.... They're got a vet on staff that is going to be doing some newsletter articles on pet diabetes. From today's email:

My goal at American Diabetes Wholesale is to help educate pet owners about diabetes in animals. I graduated from veterinary school in 1993, and practiced in Oregon for 17 years. After spending my first 7 years as an emergency veterinarian, I found the passion for international veterinary volunteer work.

I made my living for many years as a "relief veterinarian" in the US as a general practitioner, and took off each winter - travelling to underdeveloped nations to help animals. In 2005, I founded Veterinary Ventures which takes teams of veterinarians to remote areas of the world with the goal of providing quality veterinary care when such care is either lacking or inadequate. Since 2000 I have been on 11 volunteer campaigns. I've worked in the Cook Islands, American Samoa, Tahiti, Mexico, Peru and Thailand. In 2010 I moved from Oregon to South Florida. I am again providing relief services to veterinary clinics in South Florida and have also started a veterinary house-call practice.

My father had diabetes and I strongly believe in diabetes education. I am happy to communicate with you and encourage your questions - I'll be available to respond to emails as needed. Should you be interested in contacting me, my email address is Joi.SuttonDVM@AmericanDiabetesWholesale.com.

Of course, you need a good working relationship with your veterinarian, but I hope to help you understand diabetes better and improve your ability to treat your pets. Your own veterinarian will guide you, but it is important as a pet owner of a diabetic animal that you have a strong understanding of the disease.

Much of this may sound familiar to what you learned in high school health class, and honestly, pet diabetes isn't terribly different from diabetes in people. In the coming weeks I will discuss what insulin does to your pet, diabetes home monitoring, the importance of dental care, and how diet affects blood glucose. I can also offer you some tips on selecting the proper medical products to make it easier to treat your pet.

I look forward to talking with you!

Perhaps we can email her some suggestions for topics? :-D :-D :-D

Re: 9/28 Willie AMPS 92 ADW Code

Or, even suggest she visit FDMB and see what we do here!!

Willie's numbers are looking good. I noticed a couple of visits to the 40s and no dose reduction. Are you holding for 3 drops below 50?

Re: 9/28 Willie AMPS 92 ADW Code

thanks for the code I may go ahead and place a order never hurts to get ahead on supplies and great amps Willie :-D

Re: 9/28 Willie AMPS 92 ADW Code

Beautiful start for Willie! He is looking so great. Thanks for the code. I may go ahead and order more strips now.

I read the articles you had on FB about the farmers. Unbelievable! I usually don't buy organic because you never know if they really are. Anyone can say that they only sell organic items, but there is no regulation if they aren't certified and no way to prove one way or another. Quite the little scam they had going on, huh?

Hope you have a great day!!

Re: 9/28 Willie AMPS 92 ADW Code

Hi guys .. love the amps willie! Wow, crazy on those farmers .. Glad to hear the other farmer just "dropped by", otherwise who knows how long this could have gone on, right? I think what sienne suggested was a great idea, have them stop by here and see what this site is all about .. I won't be here tomorrow so have a great weekend!

Re: 9/28 Willie AMPS 92 ADW Code

Thanks for the code! Crazy with those farmers running a CSA and not growing anything... I'm so thankful for my CoOp here- they do all of that background checking for me. I know that the things I get there are what they say they are... not so for everyone.... :-x

Re: 9/29 Willie AMPS 92, +2~92, +2.5~80 ADW Code

Willie got avoderm this morning as we had no food bounce and started dropping before +3. The one downside to my new house is that it really isn't feasible for me to go home over my lunch hour. nailbite_smile nailbite_smile nailbite_smile

Thanks for peeking in on Willie's spreadsheet, Sienne. Because Willie hasn't always held his reductions in the past, I've been making him hit 40 before taking a reduction, or doing the 3 times under 50 rule (though, truthfully, until you mentioned it just now, it had slipped my mind as of late!).

We've had the following:
9/17 42
9/19 48
9/24 58 at +3.5, so maybe
9/27 47

With the pattern this morning, I strongly suspect that he'll dip below 50 this cycle, so I had planned to at least shave the dose tonight... do you think I should go ahead and take the full reduction to 0.75u?

I was thinking about emailing the vet about FDMB. On the to-do list!

Re: 9/29 Willie AMPS 92, +2~92, +2.5~80 ADW Code

lots of times on mrrebates they'll have discount codes for ADW - i have yet to have any of them be valid though. but i always end up with free shipping because i buy 200 strips and lancets at once. even 200 doesn't really last that long.

good catch on the farm people. we like people to be honest and accountable for what they say/do.

willie's numbers sure are looking super! go willie go!

Re: 9/29 Willie AMPS 92, +2~92, +2.5~80 ADW Code

I placed my order last week, too...they were out of the Arkray strips!! The managed to scrounge up 100 to send me at the time because I groveled...I did NOT want to run to Walmart! The remaining 250 shipped on Monday. I suspect we FDMB folks are keeping them hopping with test strips!!!

Very cool about the vet they've got on staff!

Re: 9/29 Willie AMPS 92, +2~92, +2.5~80 ADW Code

Waaaaaa i'm jealous of ADW

I buy organic all the time, all my fruits and veggies for the most part, it would definitely be tougher to regulate the farmers markets. At least at the grocery stores all organic food comes with a seal on it that states the farmer is registered as organic.

I'm trying out the 3 times below 50 rule with Leo at the moment, but hadn't thought of the below 40 rule. Very nice numbers for Willie today.

I know! I had one order slip between the cracks once, and when I called, they got it out that day with free overnight shipping to make up for it. So when my order didn't go out after a couple days last week, I called on Wednesday and their shipment that was held up was getting in either that night or the next morning. How crazy!

My strips that supposedly shipped on Monday still haven't arrived...makes me a little nervous. Hopefully today!

Tracy, if you're ever looking to buy a bunch of strips at once, don't rule them out. I know they charge $30 for shipping to Canada, but you'd be surprised at how fast you can save $30.

For example, I buy Relion strips at Walmart for $0.40/strip, so 250 strips would be $110 or so with sales tax. I get them for $70 on ADW... and for $102 total, (because of free shipping) got the strips AND 3 boxes of monoject syringes. Even adding on the $30 shipping if I were in Canada, I'd be coming out ahead.

Re: 9/29 Willie AMPS 92, +2~92, +2.5~80 ADW Code

Hi Christie & Willie,
NICE numbers, Willie! You may get your 3 under 50 this week! Thanks for the ADW code. I just got my order last week, too, but I may order again also. Never hurts (I get the FreeStyle Lite "package" with 200 strips plus the meter kit--it's cheaper than just buying the strips, and you get the test fluid, too, as part of the meter kit, plus an extra 10 strips as part of the kit.)

Awful story about the CSA "organic" farm. Here we all know the farmers. They are not primarily organic, but we know that the food is theirs and that it is local (to me the most important thing is that it is local). In the supermarket I try to buy primarily certified organic. It's more expensive, of course, but it tastes better and it's safer without all those pesticides. "You get what you pay for" and I don't want my food money going to Monsanto!

Thanks so much for visiting Stu's remembrance condo yesterday and for your lovely thoughts. Yes, Willie, Stu taught Mannie to grill, and Mannie was the grill specialist in Chef Stu's kitchen. Now Rusty and you are the grill specialists in Chef Mannie's kitchen. Neat, isn't it?

Re: 9/29 Willie AMPS 92, +2~92, +2.5~80 ADW Code

What a great informational condo today!

and I second Sienne's suggestion...invite her to peruse the Board!!

that could wind up being beneficial to her endeavor...and even better...helpful to FDMB

Re: 9/29 Willie AMPS 92, +2~92, +2.5~80 ADW Code

Congratulations on getting the reduction tonight!  Imagine forgetting that you can take a reduction, although I'm probably guilty of the sane thing. Tess has just been putting her greens too far apart.

Thanks for the ADW code , I don't need anything right now, but I should probably stock up. Tracy had me looking through the site because I thought they shipped to Canada, but I found they now have an affiliates program! I'm PMing the link to Rebecca. We could shop there from the FDMB link and get some support for the site directly like we used to do w/ Hocks.

Re: 9/29 Willie AMPS 92, +2~92, +2.5~80 ADW Code

It's because of you, Christie, that ADW is running out of strips. You told all of us and now we all shop there!! I'm supposed to be getting my 350 strips today....I better because I only have 3 strips left and I have a cat in low numbers!! And, of course, I missed the 10% off, too. In case anyone finds a coupon code that doesn't work, just use google to find a coupon site that has a working code. That's what I did. Their ADW550 code didn't work so I googled and got a different coupon code that did work. So I got my 5% off!! I never knew ADW had a newsletter. That is completely awesome. I'm going to sign up to get them sent to me.

Willie is looking like a million bucks!!! What a beautiful green surf!!!

Re: 9/29 Willie AMPS 92, +2~92, +2.5~80 ADW Code

Ann-- I know that Rebecca was looking into becoming an affiliate... not sure what came of it.

Patty-- definitely get on their mailing list! They send out limited time coupon codes once or twice month. Going to have to see how many the of the emails I still have... wondering if they tend to go out around the same time each month!

Willie seems grouchy tonight... I got a "oh. YOU'RE home" greeting, and some cries when picking him up to both poke and shoot.

Got my ADW shipment. Might be bartering some monojects soon. Every try, I get a large, dome-shaped bubble that I've tried every trick in the book to get rid of, and nothing seems to work. I -think- I shot 0.75u tonight, but I have no idea for sure, and that bugs me.

Forwarded the farmer's market story... there are now likely to be state and federal inquiries; there is interest from the state house of representatives, and one of the local news stations has a story in full swing. Usually, my missives of righteous indignation accomplish very little, so it was a surprise to see a response on this. Will be interesting to see what happens.

I have over a half a box of Monojects with a box of ReliOn's on top. I went back to the ReliOn's. I had the exact same problem you describe. There's a bubble at the very, very top and you just can't express the air out. It got to the point I never knew how much insulin Champ was actually getting because I always felt there was air trapped at the very top. I started getting green numbers again when I went back to the ReliOn's. The Monojects have a smoother plunger action so it's easier to get to the exact dose you're looking for, even the 0.25 doses, but the ReliOn is sooo much easier to get bubbles out.

btw....I got my ADW shipment today to. Three days from Florida to Las Vegas....awesome!!!

This discussion came up once before on the Monojects. If you look w/ a good magnifier, you will see that the end of the needle extends down below the top of the syringe barrel. Air will alwauy be trapped in that space.
