Buster had licked his chest quite a bit by the time I came home for lunch. I was able to give him some Tramadol. I really wish he would stop that. Adequan injection #6 is due today.

Re: 9/27 Buster PMPS 111 - Tramadol paranoia?

Buster was pretty squirmy for testing and he kept looking at me when I was trying to give him his insulin while he ate. I couldn't even think of giving his Adequan shot while he ate. He was very suspicious. Not normal for him. Usually, he sits peacefully for testing and purrrrrrrs. I always give his insulin while he's chowing down and he never notices a thing. I was wondering if the Tramadol can make them a lil paranoid? Can it effect their appetite?

I was wondering if the Tramadol can make them a lil paranoid

ummm....just a little!! YES, YES, AND ANOTHER YES.

Tom was on Tramadol ONCE and he was a totally wild black-eyed freaked out creature! I was shocked....the vet never even told me that may be a reaction. They just told me, while laughing, that Tom may be a little out of it for a while. I took that as extra tired....nope. just the opposite. He acted like he could see stars on the ceiling and heard voices in the wind, and definitely no purrs....felt so badly for him.

Thank you for your help regarding Dasuquin.....glad to know it is fine with Buster! Are you still going to give it to him when you are also using Adequan? Have you seen results from the Adequan yet? I am curious about those shots...but not too sure if Tom "qualifies". How arthritic is Buster?

I hope his paranoia goes away soon! I don't know if the Tramadol effects appetite....that was the last thing Tom was concerned about....hopefully you will get some more help from others soon...

i only gave tramadol to punkin once and i thought it gave him hallucinations. it was awful. he was looking around the room and seemed to be seeing things around him.

i wouldn't give it to buster again. is it for arthritic pain? if so, bupe might be another option. we had good success with that.

Re: 9/27 Buster PMPS 111 - Tramadol causing paranoia?

Thanks you guys. I thought I was being over sensitive or something, but he just acts like he sees ghosts or something. Unsettled. Anxious. Nervous. Good to know I'm not crazy too! Sometimes he reacts like this and sometimes not. I might have to try something else.

My vet recommended doing Dasuquin, Tramadol and Adequan for his arthritis and also because he is licking at his chest and elbow/shoulder areas. He just has the beginning stages of arthritis. Nothing dramatic. I think the Adequan is helping. I stopped with the Dasuquin because it didnt' make sense to me to have 2 joint supplements onboard. I think the Tramadol helps him to stop licking his chest, but I also think he goes a lil batcrap crazy on it, so that's no good. I did notice his eyes were very black, too. I will call my vet tomorrow for a consult. For now, he's just gonna have to get some extra hugs and work through it.

I also think he goes a lil batcrap crazy on it

  yes, that would be about right!!!

you are giving Buster the Adequan shots yourself .......

how does that work?
it has to be given IM right?
how do you do that? straight in and hard? in the thigh?
a different size needle than you use for insulin?

Thanks for your info!!

I give the injections SubQ, just like the insulin, actually. The needle is huuuuge compared to the insulin, but I have been able to give it to him and he doesn't even notice. Usually when he's eating, but also sometimes when he's sleepy and relaxed.

I was using the harpoon syringes and Dyana told me she uses the insulin syringes for the adequan so I got rid of the harpoons. It's much easier with the better needles.
The Terumo harpoon size weren't any better than the ones the vet gave me.
I had hoped since the Terumo insulin syringes were nice and easy, that it would also be the case with other sizes but it wasn't in this instance. Wasted $
