Just an FYI for those of you who have recently purchased the Merrick and your kitty turned up his/her nose at the food.

I thought Curry wasn't feeling well since her appetite seemed to be off. :sad:

Curry's appetite is NEVER off. Since Thursday morning she wasn't eating her food like usual. Finally, last night I smelled the contents of the can. It smelled like plastic or metal. I then opened another can....same thing.....I had just purchased about 14 cans 2 weeks ago and just now opened them on Thursday....when her appetite changed. I then opened a 3.2 oz can that I had purchased months ago....OMG.....the smell is so different. No wonder Curry wasn't eating. The newly purchased cans smelled horrible.....wonder if they changed their packaging process.

Now she didn't get sick....just wouldn't eat it.....I wouldn't have eaten it either....it was awful.

The date on the new can: is 26 July 13. Lot number:11207 CL2 20474 1724.

So I'm calling the company today about the problem.

I'm now afraid to buy more of this food.

I've tried keeping Curry at 2% carbs and had initially feed her the FF classic.

What is is carb content of the lowest Wellness product? Is it the Core- chicken, turkey, chicken liver product @ 5% carb?

That's good to know about the BG food. Please post back when you hear from the company.

This spreadsheet contains info on some of the newer foods that aren't all on Janet & Binky's. Wellness Core is 8%. The EVO 95% chicken and turkey is 2%.

Hi guys .. wow, how crazy about the difference in the smell! Poor curry .. her food looked the same but didn't smell the same or most likely taste the same to her .. :sad: I hope they can explain the difference in the smell to you .. have a great day guys!

I hope you get some answers. I'm curious. Trix eats BG chicken; she's not a huge fan of it, so I do a 50/50 mix with FF. But I haven't noticed it smelling "off" in any way. Years ago, I had a similar problem with Wellness; I swear it just flat out smelled like urine, and it had a very weird consistency. I contacted the company, and they gave me a song and dance. Hopefully, you'll get better results from Merrick.

Hi Tena, thanks for making us aware of the Merrick bg, and hope the company gives you some answers. That's one of the foods Maggie would not eat. I may even have some of the bg Merrick in a cabinet. I'll open one and check it out if I locate one. We're well stocked! I'll be looking for updates.

Hi Tena, I do have some of the Merrick BG - I just opened the Beef BG 6 small can dated "use by 13 Sept 12, and the Lot# is 204810820. This is one of the older batch, so the smell seems ok I think. Let us know what you learn about it!
 
Well I called customer service. Maria was very friendly and helpful.

So they have not changed the ingredients or processing.

She said that could have been a bad batch and apologized profusely.

Will send me coupons to purchase new food.

And I learned something about the numbers on the can.

The two cans I opened (and stunk) had the following lot numbers:

11207 CL2 20474 1724
11207 CL2 20474 1725

The "11" is for the eleventh month and the "207" is for the 207th day of that month.

I told her that I was concerned about purchasing more food with the same problem so she was able to give me the above information. When I go back I won't purchase anything close to the 207th day in case it was an issue on multiple days. And I'll definitely smell it before giving it to poor Curry.
 
Glad they were helpful in trying to figure it out - I would bet they sent your email down to their plant manager after she got off the phone with you!

I think you mean YEAR - 11==> 2011 and 207 = day of that year

I had a couple of cans of Merricks BG (i forget the flavor) that had bad seals and the contents were moldy -- I stuck in the freezer to return next time I buy food. (literally covered with white fuzz and very stinky)

Sorry...for the brain fart on my part.

Yes. Year = the 2 numbers and 207 is the day of that year.

Yuck on the fuzzy food. And thanks on catching my typo.
 
Thanks Tena for the update and good to know they didn't change the formula. Nice to be able to get thru to Customer Service so fast, too, and great on the coupons.
 
That is crazy. We only feed FF (since that is all Mr. picky pants will eat) but I have never had a problem. I guess it could happen with any brand.

Of course, I JUST placed an order on Petco.com that included a case of the Merrick BG Turkey! I went with the 5.5 oz cans, so hopefully they'll be okay. I'll be looking closely at the lot numbers! Thank you so, so much for posting this!!

I had planned to mix it with the Innova Cat/Kitten. I'd love to be able to feed it exclusively as it is very inexpensive on the petco site. It's just a bit too high in both carbs and phosphorus for Willie's needs, so I plan to dilute with raw and/or BG.

When we are feeding canned, I typically alternate between the BG Turkey and Blue Wilderness Duck. Similar calories, carbs and phosphorus, but the Wilderness is higher in fat and lower in protein (and, unfortunately, is more expensive). Personally, I prefer to alternate between two brands so that if there is a recall, Willie hasn't been solely eating the recalled food... I know some cats that were fed exclusively Wellness ended up with health problems after the Vitamin B debacle. Trying to avoid that possibility by rotating brands.
 
So Miss Curry ate all her fuds today. Took the problem cans back and bought some new ones. Checked the lot numbers. They still had some cans on the shelf with lot number 11207. Bought some with 11186 and opened one just now. Yummo- no plastic smelling fragrances. Curry gave it 2 thumbs up.
