Achilles has eaten breakfast number one and has played with his new nanner. All is good in kittyland.
Not much planned for the day other than keeping any eye on Achilles and seeing if he decides to go below 50 today.
I finally have some time to visit some condos today, so let's see what Achilles' buddies are up to today.

Enjoy the day.

Good job Eva! That drop at +1 shows he means business! Glad you fed that too....nice job Achilles!

Re: 9/26 Achilles AMPS 72 +1 69 +2 50 +3 50 +3.5 54

Well, Achilles may not want to start his trial this evening with this +3.5 of 54.

Ah well, there's always tomorrow buddy. I attribute these numbers to feeding 5% or less. If I go down to 0% I may get that number in the 40s after all. But the only 0% I have is FF fish and shrimp and I try to limit it to only once or twice a week.

We still can't get him to eat the Wellness or Evo food "straight-up." He will eat it if we mix it with FF though. Apparently, Achilles is very brand loyal.

actually, I think Achilles is ready for a trial. 50 is pretty darn close to 49, and he has been in good numbers on this dose for a week (except the 130, but he got away from that really quickly). Are you ready?

Here's what you do:

Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).

If he is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!

Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. It is not unusual for cats to get lots of blue during their trial, especially at first. Don't panic and don't shoot unless we tell you to.

After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

Good luck!

Libby - thanks for the detailed advice.

In terms of feeding, we have been on the following schedule which I try hard to maintain. Please let me know if you think it should be tweaked initially. I suspect there might be some tweaking as we go along depnding, of course, on his numbers. He gets 6oz of wet food a day broken into 8 feedings as follows:

1/4 can amps
1/4 can +1
1/4 can +3
1/4 can +8 or +9
------------------
1/4 can pmps
1/4 can +1
1/4 can +3
1/4 can +8 or +9

This is very exciting!! I can't believe we are about to start! So I guess we'll get a PMPS number tonight, but we won't shoot.

Re: 9/26 Achilles AMPS 72 +1 69 +2 50 +3 50 +3.5 54

that looks good, though you might want to throw something in around +6 (maybe move the +2 one, or split one of the other feedings in half). Experiment as you go along. It doesn't matter as much when you feed since you're not shooting, except that it's good to get small meals frequently.

Good luck!

Re: 9/26 Achilles AMPS 72 +1 69 +2 50 +3 50 +3.5 54

We can take half of the food from his +3 feeding and half from his +9 feeding and insert a +6 feeding. This way he gets an extra feeding but not extra food.

I think we may need an extra autofeeder though as we're not around in the morning for the +3, +6 or +9

Re: 9/26 Achilles AMPS 72 +1 69 +2 50 +3 50 +3.5 54

I wouldn't spend money to do this. I think Achilles will be fine. Honesty I didn't have to make any extra efforts when Lucy went OTJ, I free feed wet food so she eats mostly at PS then nibbles whenever she feels like it. It worked fine for Lucy, so I wouldn't spend money on another feeder unless it turns out that Achilles needs it.

Here we go!!!! I'm excited and nervous at the same time. nailbite_smile :-D nailbite_smile
He gave us a nice PMBG of 70.
I suppose there's no need to test 'til morning, right?
Wish us luck!

Woohooo. Go Achilles. We Are ALL Cheering You On.

This is awesome. I think Achilles will do well. Looks like your path has been very similar to Stinky's - and Stinky has been OTJ for a month now... You've done really well with this. Congrats.
