Alain and I were devastated yesterday when we saw Farine's BG levels. She got a tiny shot of insulin this morning (0.15u), but it seems like it wasn't enough. Ever since Farine was OTJ we figured her own normal range was a little higher than what we would have hoped for... But her pancreas was strong enough to handle the numbers on a daily basis.

2 days ago, after I encouraged him to do so, Alain switched Farine to a commercial raw food : one that only contains meat, raw meaty bones and giblets (of turkey, beef and fish) ONLY (no fruits/vegetables whatsoever). I looked at the nutritional analysis and the total was higher than 100%... Weird I know, but still, I concluded that since the ingredients are all meat and the nutritional analysis contains so much proteins, it should be just like, or even better, than Evo chicken/turkey in terms of carbs. It seems like I was wrong
:((((

I wrote an email to the company and the owner answered me. She says that something is obviously incorrect in the analysis and that there's no way her food could contain enough carbs to trigger diabetes in a cat. I told her that I too thought it was weird. She's taking my "accusation" pretty seriously. She'll get back to me after she contacts her meat providers and wants to correct the nutritional analysis so that we know exactly the carb %.

But whatever she does, Farine now needs insulin. I pray for a quick remission (which would be her third remission), but both Alain and I are feeling a bit sad about the situation.

Here's Farine's spreadsheet :
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... oSHc#gid=0

Now we're being careful with the dosage since Farine's pancreas is not completely asleep

Possibly her stomach was upset by the change in diet and that caused the higher bg? Did Alain switch foods suddenly, with a complete meal of the raw? Many cats need to transition slowly to a new food.

Yes Camille. As it was a sample and couldn't keep it for a while i gave her 3 meals (21 oclock and the day after 9 and 21 o'clock) first with just chicken i made, second and third the raw sample...
Sorry i did a bad thing...

If the raw is chicken and they're sourcing human grade meat, there's a chance there's up to a 3% sugar solution used to preserve it...just like turkeys. KT loves raw chicken but Dakota and the rest of the kittycrew think I'm trying to poison them. I only use it as a treat for KT when I'm fixing chicken for us beans, cats all eat canned....

BIG HUGS!

Sure does seem like there are some carbs hiding in that food. Please let us know what you find out from the food company. I'll be keeping an eye out to see if Farine's numbers come back down after switching back to her usual food. Hoping Farine makes it back to the falls soon!! Big (((hugs))).

fyi: I've transitioned Sammy through several different foods and always do it very gradually over the period of a week or two to avoid any digestive upsets. Start with only a teaspoon of the new food mixed in with the old, and gradually increase the ratio. So far (luckily) have avoided any issues.

Can you change her back to the old food? If the new food is high carb then it should wear off hopefully soon.

Its not worth the risk.. she was doing good on the old stuff.

Good luck - I hope this is just a short visit back here.

If you do want to try commercial raw food again, look for a manufacturer that uses organic meat. The supplier I use Red Dog Blue Cat uses organic/non medicated meat. They do have a couple outlets in Montreal. I have a copy of their lab analysis of their product, and in spite of having a tiny bit of veggies in their cat product, the carb % is between 3-5%, depending on the product. Often canine versions of raw food is higher carbs than cats, as they need more carbs. Nature's Variety is also available in Canada and their chicken product is quite low carbs.

This morning Farine's results are great!
We hope it's not only a depot thing... but a definitive recovery!
Fingers and paws crossed!

Great news! Apparently, there is something in the raw food or Farine needs a lot of time to adjust to a food change. I'm glad Alain is seeing green again!
