AT VET for the day

Tableau continues to not eat AT ALL!!!. He is at the vet today and they are running tests and giving IV fluids. I've been giving fluids at home and syringe feeding him, but it isn't enough. He is still dehydrated. His normal healthy weight is 11 lbs. He's now at 7.6 lbs. I am hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.

He has been such a good friend to me for 16 years. We have experienced so much together. In retorpsect I feel I should have let the cancer take it's course and not done the radiation treatments, as he's had a steady decline ever since the treatments ended. Perhaps it would have been better to let him live out his days in ignorance and less stress. Ah, hindsight.

Anyway, who knows, maybe he will turn around. Results later today. Sorry to be so maudlin, but I am very sad today.

I am so sorry you and Tableau are going through this. I just wanted to let you know that I have been reading his condos and think about him frequently. I hope he manages to pull through this episode and is back to his old self soon... but I also understand the fear and sadness and the frustration of not knowing what is wrong with him. Healing and calming thoughts to both of you.

Hi guys .. I'm sorry tableau is having such a rough go right now .. I'm keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers .. I know facing the unknown is scary .. know we are all praying for you guys ..

(((((emily & tableau)))))

you continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. i am the master of hindsight, and i know it's all too easy for me to think i should've done something different. but, i am certain you made the best decision you could at the time you needed to make it. trust yourself - in every way you have tried to do what was best for tableau.

i'm cheering for him, hoping some food and fluids helps him turn around.

and i understand where you are. you love your little one. hugs. peace.

Thanks so much for your kind words and thoughts. It's helpful to know other people, who understand how much we love our cats, are thinking about us.

I just spoke with the vet and there is no definitive news yet - some good, some potentially bad...

a) No ketones...Surprise and yeah!
b) extremely elevated liver values - they are checking for pancreatitis
c) chest x-rays (not sure why, other than cancer may have spread)
d) electrolyte imbalance (giving potassium, etc, to correct)

So, we shall see. We are hoping that getting his electrolytes corrected will at least help him feel well enough to start eating again on his own.

(((((((Emily and Tableau)))))))) I am wishing Tableau recovers and that its not related to cancer or treatment. I would have made the same decisions. We only do our best and what we think is right and all out of love. Wishing you lots more quality time with Tableau. I know how worried you must be and wish we were all closer and could give you real hugs.

Would your vet be up to trying an antinausea medication also. Ondansetron or dolasetron for example (NOT reglan/metoclopromide). It may help if there is some nausea. Is he showing interest in food but just licking/sniffing and walking away?

I will ask about the anti nasea medicine. Yes, he walks up to the food and looks at it. Sometimes he will give it one lick. Then he just walks away.

((((Emily and Tableau)))) I am so sorry that you are going through this. This sounds exactly like what happened to us a few weeks ago. Hopefully the fluids will do the trick. See if they can give him some Ondansetron. It really helped Tarragon. Of course, he never did eat until he got home. He had went from 10.5 pounds down to 8. We are thinking of you and sending healing vines your way.

Melissa, I'm glad Tarragon is doing better. Glad to hear he's recovered, gives me hope. I guess I was overreacting this morning - but I just felt like if he won't eat, that's kind of the end of it, on top of everything else that's been going on. But I'm more hopeful now that we can get him eating again once the electrolytes are taken care of!

Thanks for the hugs and healing thoughts!

Emily you have our thoughts and prayers for you and Tableau. You are doing everything you can for him and always have made the best decisions. Hang in there :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Please double check with your vet regarding the electrolytes. Which electrolytes are off? Potassium and phosphorus are generally low in DKA. Did the vet say no ketones or were there even a trace amount? Also, fluids can effect electrolyte balance. You need to be sure that when giving fluids you are not creating a different problem.

I second what Sienne said. When Tarragon first went, they said he had no ketones. His potassium and phosphorus were a little low, but still within tolerance. As they give fluids, this makes the potassium and phosphorus drop even more if it is DKA so they need to be adding this in the iv as well. Tarragon didn't show ketones until day 2 in the hospital. He was doing the same thing. He would sniff the food, maybe lick it once, then walk away. He also had acute pancreatitis, which the anti nauseau medicine would help.

They have replaced the fluids with the ones that have the low electrolytes. She said he was off on potassium and sodium, didn't mention phosphorus. Said there were no ketones in his urine, but lots of sugar. But I will double check all this with her.

Thanks for the insight!

Emily and Tableau, we are sending lots of healing vines and good thoughts your way and hoping that Tableau responds to treatment. You have acted with Tableau's best interests at heart. I wish every kitty could have a bean like you. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Ok. I confirmed that there were no ketones and that he was low on sodium and potassium, not phosphorus.

So the plan no is to transfer him to the hospital so that he can stay on the fluids/electrolytes over night. Then tomorrow, an ultrasound of his liver.

The x-rays showed only his asthma in his chest (no additional tumors) and the x-ray of his abdomen showed a lot of gas (she was calling it megacolon, given his constipation issues).

That's all the news for now. Thanks for your support. I'll provide updates as they come.

There is a yahoo mega colon group.

When did his constipation issues start? Maverick's started after we switched him to wet food. Is Tableau on flovent/albuterol also? Maverick was on flovent. There are a few asthma kitties on the board.
