Hi All,

Busy morning here, thus no condo. Jetta is sky-high today, 415 at AMPS, and tested at +2 home from her vet visit (+5.25 overall) and she was 294.

I talked to the vet about Jetta's dry skin which just started about 2 weeks ago. She's all dandruffey which she has never been before. She also lost a couple ounces. To help with the dry skin and to try to get more weight back on her, he recommended a supplement called Enercal. So I bought it, brought it home, opened it, and went to put it on her food, when my light bulb (finally) went on to check the ingredients. #2 is corn syrup. ohmygod_smile So I called them to ask if that was still a good idea to use, and the vet said to think of it like a meal and give it with her AM shot. Well, I don't think I like that answer. Woulndn't that be akin to a diabetic person eating a Snickers for breakfast every day? Am I right that I should toss the stuff?? (or keep it in my hypo kit?)

Provided you all agree that stuff should not be part of my sugar cat's daily regimen, I'd still like an Omega 3 supplement or something similar to help with her skin. Do any of you use an Omega supplement? My dog takes Allerg3 capsules, and I need to order more so I was thinking I could just order the liquid form to squirt into Jetta's food, pending your replies.

Other than, that her visit went well. They're running a full blood panel (re-check from last month) and fructosamine test, and a urinalysis. I should have the results tomorrow. I had her saddle re-shaved for DH's shoot lessons.

Thanks for any advice or thoughts on the supplement issue.

Re: 9/21 Jetta Supplement questions

PM Christie (& Willie) she did a lot of research into it on just what to look for. One thing I do know is not to get the liquid. It goes rancid very fast and then cats may turn up their noses at it. Get capsules and prick them and squirt onto their food.

Re: 9/21 Jetta Supplement questions

Glad she had a good vet visit!
and hope you get some good input on the supplement questions...

I don't have an answer about the supplement for you, but I love this response from your vet  . Boy, it's a good thing Jetta has you looking out for her - sheesh!

I hope Jetta comes down for you soon - but not too fast!

Re: 9/21 Jetta Supplement questions

Thanks Ann, I pm'd Christie. Thanks Celi- me too.
Hi Amy- I know, I expected the vet to say Whoops! No, don't give it to her. At least I've learned not to back down! I hope she comes down too, but if I know Jetta, she'll wait to do it in dramatic fashion one night.

Re: 9/21 Jetta Supplement questions

In one of my many marathon reading sessions on feline diabetes, I remember reading that high bg's will cause dry and flaky skin. Don't ask me where 'cos I've read for WEEKS now...

Re: 9/21 Jetta Supplement questions

Zener has dandruff that seems to come and go. That would make sense with what KT said.

Re: 9/21 Jetta Supplement questions

Tarragon is black and his dandruff was one of the things that clued the vet he had diabetes just by looking at him.

Hope you get answers. We have never used any of the supplements.

Re: 9/21 Jetta Supplement questions

Thanks KT and Liz. And Melissa- wow- that's astounding. Mine didn't seem to make any correlation between the two confused_cat

Re: 9/21 Jetta Supplement questions

Wierd huh? I had noticed that he had more dandruff than usual, but it was the first thing she mentioned when we went in. She wanted to know how long he had had the dandruff.

Re: 9/21 Jetta Supplement questions

Gabby was licking excessively to the point of having close to bald spots. This is the note from my vet:

There are several options—there is a product called Allerderm which is applied once weekly to the skin which can be quite helpful for itchy or dry skin. Additional fish oil omega-3 fatty acids, 200-250 mg daily, are often helpful, but may take up to 2 weeks to really have an effect. Antihistamines are often helpful—we seem to have the best success with Zyrtec, which is over-the-counter, or hydroxyzine which is a prescription medication.

We have Allerderm here, but you may be able to order it online. Zyrtec dosage is ½ of a 10 mg tablet by mouth (in food…) twice daily, or about every 12 hours, try for 7 days. Watch for drowsiness or restlessness, although side effects from Zyrtec are not likely or are very mild. Use plain Zyrtec, or cetirizine, only—no combo meds. The fish oil product we use is AllerG3, or you can use human products.

I had fish oil gel caps at home. I squirt about 1/4 of the oil from gel cap into Gabby's food. She's not excessively grooming any more. Allerderm is available through Amazon.

Re: 9/21 Jetta PMPS 359 EnerCal question

Thanks for all the info on the skin stuff. I ordered AllerG3 caps to poke to add to her food. I'm still wondering on teh EnerCal supplement though.

In other news, tonight was DH's first draw and shoot. He couldn't get her ears to cooperate so after an eternity of trying, I did that part. But he drew the dose and shot great, so we're 60% there I'd say. 9 days until I leave Jetta in his (shaking) hands. nailbite_smile nailbite_smile nailbite_smile

Re: 9/21 Jetta PMPS 359 EnerCal question

I had a similar situation with one of the vet's in the practice I use. She prescribed a probiotic -- Propectalin. After I got home, I checked the ingredients and, you guessed it, sugar. When I called, the vet's response was, "Well, you're testing, so you'll know if it's effecting Gabby's numbers." My response was to ask her if she'd like me to give her diabetic child a couple of tablespoons of ice cream a couple of times a day. She replied, "I see your point."

Hi Jaclyn,

Congrats on DH's first shoot! :-D Mine started last week - after much protest  - when I had to go out of town. It still takes him a few tries to get the test done, but he is getting better at it (just like me - I DID cry a few times at first). So yours will do ok, too.

Jetson had dandruff really bad - has actually had it for a few years, but no one at the vet's mentioned any ties to FD. Interestingly, he only gets a few flakes now and then, but it's mostly gone since he started on Lantus.

Hope Jetta (lovely Egyptian godess that you are) surfs some decent numbers for you tonite
