Not sure if this is a real emergency, but I have to leave for work in 30 mins and I will be gone for ten hours, and Boots is at 105 4 hours after his shot. Im scared he will drop too low in the next couple of hours and no one will be home, which is exactly what I was worried about when upping his dose. hat should I do??

Can you leave food out for him and know that he will eat it? He may or may not continue to drop, but if you can't be there the best thing to do is feed him more now before you leave, and leave food out so that if he needs more, he will have something available. My cat pulls dives like this all the time so that's how I handle it if I have to be at work. If I am worried she is still going down in an enthusiastic manner I will give her medium carb before I leave just so I know it will keep her BG up a bit.

I can leave it out, but I have another cat who comes up behind him and eats everything he leaves in the bowl, which is causing a problem because he doesn't have food for up to 5 hours a day after she finishes his off. I also don't know what medium carb food is, I only have low carb and a can of high carb gravy food for emergencies.

You can make medium carb by mixing the regular low carb and some of the high carb - if it's half and half then the carb count is the average of the two. He might not need the extra carbs, I just mentioned it in case you want to be really sure he's not going lower. Feeding him some of the regular low carb might be fine too. If you're worried about the other cat eating his food, is there a way you could put one of them in a different room for the day with his own food/water/litter? This might totally not be anything to worry about, since 105 is not that low and you likely only have a couple more hours before nadir, but it might give you more peace of mind.

I think I will mix the foods like y'all suggested and hope that works. I live in a very small apt, there isn't even room for a second litterbox in here, I just have to clean the one out twice a day so it's never filthy.

When you have a chance, please update your SS. It helps us help you when you are wanting input to know what the recent numbers look like.

Boots may be close to nadir so you should be fine with leaving out food.

I sometimes leave LOTS of food out when I am worried and have to go to work.
Like enough that your other cat wouldn't eat it all.

Sorry, I really try to update it every day, but I haven't been home for more than sleep in days. I think today is day 5, I will have a minute to update it tonight when I get home. I left out a few bowls of food in a few places so that hopefully my other cat doesn't eat everything in sight lol. Thanks for all the advice.

I know you are trying to get to work but could you pls take down the 911?

Do you get a lunch break that you could come back and check him if you're worried? I do agree that with giving him the MC food and it being close to nadir, he's probably fine.

another possibility for the next time it happens would be to put Boots in his own room with food, even if it's the bathroom. i kept a temporary litter box just by slipping a box lid into a garbage bag (to make it waterproof) then putting litter in it. that might be a way to cope with the days when you have to leave him and you're a bit nervous.

we loved our timed feeder - that kept me sane while i was at work so i didn't worry as much. sometimes i set it to go off every half hour from +4 to +6.5 so i knew i'd covered punkin's nadir. we had this one:

http://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-5-Meal-Electronic-Pet-Feeder/dp/B000GEWHNS?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20 you just have to make sure you get it seated all the way into the base. we always set it in so we could do a test cycle (by manually pushing the button to rotate it) and make sure it would turn and open. if you see comments where people complain that it didn't open, that's why. it just has to be seated.

hope your day went well!

Hi Jade,

Mr. Zeke was wondering how Boots is doing today? Hope momma bean is doing well too.

Boots is well :) Thank you. Momma is tired. After the one day of low numbers he is going back up though. This is all still very confusing.

Oh, so happy to hear Boots is fine. Zeke was diagnosed about the same time as Boots. We started Zeke on insulin middle of August and have been using the members of this board to help us tweak his dosage. Zeke just recently had a failed reduction but we're hopeful that with the help of this board we'll get him back on track soon. I'm hopeful that if you're diligent about asking for and following board advice you can find the right dose for Boots and that should help immensely.

Hang in there Jade. The FDMB community is behind you.

Regards,
Laura

Hello! Sorry I have not checked in more frequently..I work whatever shift everyone else doesn't want to work, which means a lot of closing, then having to be back for 10 more hours to open, and today is my first day off since I think...6 days ago or so? I can't even remember. I actually JUST tested boots and got a 93. AMPS 339 +5 93. Is this a safe number?
