9/2 Oscar AMPS 161, +5 130, PMPS 141

Oscar is back to eating not very much. I’m trying different foods, whatever I can do to entice him. I’m a little worried he’s still got some lingering pancreatitis. My vet always just says the next step is to hospitalize him. @tiffmaxee @Bron and Sheba (GA) I know both of you have experience with pancreatitis. Have you ever had it linger for a couple months? Any suggestions? Steroids? Hospitalization? I’m just not sure what they would do at the hospital and I’d rather not spend the money if I can handle it at home…

Rarely do you need to hospitalize fur pancreatitis. I’ve had to do it for a couple of cats but one had lymphoma and for Max it was overnight a few times for IV fluids. Chronic pancreatitis can linger months. I never gave steroids. Treatment is the right amount of nausea medication, pain medication, an appetite stimulant, and fluids if not eating enough to stay properly hydrated. When starting to feel better you remove or taper off one at a time and see if still improving. If a decline you add the support back. What are you giving, doses, and how often. When Max was first diagnosed he was on ondansetron and cyproheptadine for a few months. Turns out his ondansetron dose was not enough but once I figured that out the cyproheptadine was rarely needed. The minute his appetite declined I started back on ondansetron. It can be given every 6-8 hours if needed. Can you syringe feed if not eating enough? That means about 75% of normal as you dint want to develop the bad complication of fatty liver.

He was on 4mg ondansetron and 2mg Cyproheptadine, both twice a day. He was doing well so we had tapered off and the last couple days, he’s been off again. I’ll try that dosage again? He’s gotten so hard to pill because he’s always scared of me but I’ll suck it up. He gets weird about food too, so we’re trying new ones. We got him to eat half a can or so of a weruva one earlier so that was good. And yes, I can syringe feed if he needs it.

Did you stop both? Go back to both. When you try it next time cut out cyproheptadine first. If good for a few days minimum try once a day ondansetron and see if eating well. I would not stop or even cut back until back to normal eating. Do you use gel caps and combine the two meds in one?

Can do. I don’t have much Cyproheptadine left. I hope the vet will refill without requiring hospitalization. They’re being pushy. I use pill wrap and put them together. Would a gel cap be easier? He just fights me from all the oral liquids I gave him that tasted terrible.

I would not hospitalize to get cyproheptadine. That’s just a way to make money and ridiculous! I’d try less cyproheptadine and see if it dies the job. Max just needed 1/8 and none if nausea was controlled. I found tge same thing recently with Chai.

I hate giving liquids. More would get on the mirror, my cats, and me then into my cats. I have better success with gel caps, size 4 or 3. You can get them from Amazon. I chase with a syringe of water or baby food. Chai was readily taking the water and now that’s she’s eating well not needed.

Oh my gosh. Why did I not think of the capsules?? :banghead: That would have made my life so much easier. And I have pain meds I can give him that way. Sheesh. Thank you so much. I’ll have them tomorrow so that’ll help
