Today is starting out not so bad with Champ's numbers, at least from what it has been!!! I had taken this morning off from work to take Champ to the vet for a dental. I ended up calling them this morning and canceling it. I decided to listen to my gut and not continue with this vet. He had given me the instructions to give Champ his full morning meal and his full dose of insulin at his usual time of 7 a.m. and then to bring him to the vet clinic at 9 a.m. I never got a straight answer as to when Champ's dental would be done so I would know how much time would pass from him receiving his full dose of insulin to him receiving anesthesia. I called the clinic yesterday to express my concerns and was told by the receptionist that the vet told her to tell me just to bring Champ in at 9:00 and we could talk then about my concerns. The vet never asked me how much insulin Champ is on, how I feed him or how much, or what his BGs have been, yet he wanted me to give him his full dose of insulin and then bring him into the clinic right when onset would be starting, and then put him under anesthesia. I put a call in to Champ's old vet (the one I stopped seeing because I didn't get a return phone call when I had called for help with Champ not eating). He called me at 9:00 last night (he earned major points)!! I was very honest with him and told him I was taking Champ to another vet for a dental, that I had taken him to this vet because he hadn't returned my phone call when Champ was sick and wasn't eating. I told him my concerns about the new vet and the instructions I was given, and though he didn't say outright that the other vet was wrong, he did tell me that his approach is much different. He told me to feed Champ a small meal and give him half his insulin dose because "it's better if his BGs are high for a day or two rather than low for any time at all." He talked with me for a half hour!! He then asked me to let him know how it turned out. After speaking with the old vet, I remembered how knowledgable he is about feline diabetes and I've decided to return Champ's care to him. The old vet and the people there were much more loving toward Champ, too, and that also makes me feel like they're better for him. Now I need to schedule a dental for Champ with the old vet....which is twice as expensive!!! As Marje reminded me, though, you get what you pay for!!
