Leo, what-up home boy? After a little slide into blue, you head for the hills again? I didn't do a fur shoot last night as far as I can tell, nor this morning. Still a bounce of some sort? Is it possible that stress from the thunderstorm could somehow have triggered something to dump some shed or something and I'm seeing higher numbers now?

Do I even need to test at nadir? (Saves me 1.75 hours driving at lunchtime) I am SOOO confused!

WCR: Leo is getting more and more brave, owning the apartment a little at a time. Now, I have *one* chair in my living room. I made Leo a comfy perch using a pretty large and sturdy suit case sitting on its back, with a couple blankets on top. He took to that nearly right away. But I turn around last night from the kitchen, and find that little fart sitting RIGHT in mama's chair!!! I guess Leo really IS kind of the jungle. As you can see, he's chosen the chair over his comfy perch...

5 Ps are firmly in place. Plus last night an extra special bonus - he leapt into bed last night and slept curled in a ball next to me :-D :-D :-D Wow! He's not allowed to do that at home - Molly gets dibs on the bed and we close the bedroom door. So this was Leo's first chance to be a bed cat, and there we was. Warms my heart!

He's gobbling his first two meals PS (+0 and +1) but tends to ignore the +3 or only eat half unless I encourage him. It's from the feeder, and I wonder if he isn't a little scared of it, or confused by the shape of the dish. His collar clangs against the edge. Without that, he's getting 2 cans of FF a day (1.5 of lc and .5 of MC). [edited to say .5 MC) I think he should eat a little more, but he gets a nice bit of chicken or salmon treat with each test.

[Clarification added]
Clarification - Leo gets 3 meals each cycle:
+0 1/2 can FF 3% (lc)
+1 1/2 can FF ~7% (1/4 can 3% lc and 1/4 can 10% mc)
+3 1/2 can FF 3%

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS +398 +1 449 huh?

Your +1 is likely a food spike. Overall, though, this looks like a bounce off of yesterday's blue numbers.

Why are you feeding 1/2 can of HC? If the HC is a standard part of Leo's diet, it does a lot to explain high numbers.

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS +398 +1 449 huh?

This is your work apt for the week, right?
did you get "home" around the +7?
This morning probably was a food spike combination bounce as Sienne said.

I just also wondered if Leo feels a little stressed while you aren't there and then calms down a little when you are.
The numbers didn't stay up after the storm.

How nice that Leo got to be in the bed and I'm sure he finds a lot of comfort when you are around and he can get next to you.
I can't take mine anywhere. She freaks out the entire time.

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS +398 +1 449 huh?

Quick update - I am at work. My mistake. He gets 1/2 can lc at +0 and 1/2 can at +1 which is a mix of lc and mc. Then 1/2 can lc at +3. I did the bit of mc bcz he was dipping down pretty low early in the cycle.

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS +398 +1 449 huh?

I had not read Leo's profile until a few minutes ago.
How great that he has found you and you are doing so much for him. He's only been around a short time and has such a wonderful set of
bean parents.

I have an outdoor cat too that we made him a nest in the garage with a heater.
He obviously has been an indoor cat at some point. We think he found us at age 2 ( according to vet) and he had been neutered.
He was living in the drainage ditch apparently and I put food out and eventually transitioned him to hanging out mostly in our back yard
and put him up every night in the garage ( otherwise raccoons find food and we have coyotes everywhere)

He's come in and slept in my daughters room when it's way below freezing and when he had to take AB's for a sore. So he behaves well.
It's just that Shadow is the princess here and he can't come inside and be around her. She rules and I won't upset her life any more than
it already is.
He's very sweet. I wish I could find him a home but the shelter can't require he be an indoor cat and if someone else adopted him, he
would have to learn a whole new neighborhood. He knows all the hiding places around here and he survived on his own, mighty hunter.
I'm afraid a new location/new owner/ who might let him out would get him eaten.

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS +398 +1 449 huh?

I'm with Sienne on the +1 being a food spike. Blackie does that all the time, which is pretty much why I've stopped testing her at that time.

I, too, have an outdoor kitty, and we have a box (homemade for her by DH) that I've put in a pillow with a towel on top, and a heating pad between the towel and the pillow for her in the wintertime, and it's kept on low all winter long. She loves it. Nope, none of my cats are spoiled, either.

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS 398 +1 449 +5 415

Leo doesn't tend to throw higher +1's unless he's in a bounce. I had to start watching earlier numbers because that's when he'd fall into greens too low.

I started the new feeding routine on 9/12 (+0, +1, +3) because I got feedback that feeding him at +0, +3 and +6 was putting some of his food "chasing" the insulin or a phrase like that, and that I should feed more in the beginning of the cycle. (I had done the +0, +3, +6 because he was going low nearer the start of the cycles, and I mistakenly thought spreading it out that much would help.) Now, he doesn't often eat the +3, so I gave a little oomph to the +1 by making it 7%. I'd read in someone's condo that giving a little higher carb could helps smooth out the curve, and we have very bouncy curves.

I don't think this changed schedule makes a food-induced spike, because this new schedule actually has less food at +0 than the other schedules (which were around 1 can or 3/4 can at +1). All first meals are LC.

Thoughts? I am quite confused at this.

Angela - good story - we're all suckers, aren't we?

Rhiannon - so sad - you sound like us. Molly is queen of the house, and I didn't want to do this to her, but we ended up feeling like we had no choice with Leo. He is a real little lover though. Thanks for sharing the story. I hope something works out with him. Leo ran the neighborhood too, and now he's totally indoors. It didn't take long - maybe because he is young and he realized how much easier life is "on the inside."

Leo may be happier when I am here - that's a good point. But I'm here until nearly +2. Sigh. I come home for lunch around +5, then come home from work (normally) around +11. Yesterday was an exception - very bad weather.

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS 398 +1 449 +5 415

Awww, that's so cute that Leo stole your chair!!! And you're getting cuddles in bed too!! :-D I think he's just enjoying his close time with Mama. Sounds like conquering the road trip to spend time together at your weekday home was well worth it!

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS 398 +1 449 +5 415

Deb - it is pretty special, you're right. Now only if I could get his numbers down!

I have to agree with what Sienne said regarding this possibly being a bounce from yesterday's blues.

I'm thinking of fattening up his dose tonight. His values are likely elevated some due to the trip and strange circumstances, otherwise he warranted a dose increase a couple cycles ago. I've held off because of the insanity. I don't want to go up a full dose but I think a fattening isn't out-of-line, since the stress will also continue for another week-ish. Would this be a bad idea if he's coming down from a bounce? His lowest value that started the bounce was 192, just barely a blue.

His last bounce on this dose was due to a missed dose and he only went to 161 that time.

Thoughts?

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS 398 +1 449 +5 415

Lisa, if you haven't already shot this evening, you might want to ask the dose question in your subject line and add the question mark.

Of course Leo took the chair. The cat always gets the primo spot.

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS 398 +1 449 +5 415 +12 448 fatten dose?

Just got home. PMPS is 448 - I'd like to fatten his dose. I have 10 minutes before I have to shoot.

Advice?

[EDIT never mind. Shot a fat 1.25u]

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS 398 +1 449 +5 415 PMPS 448 fattened dose

I'm sorry, I just read through your condo. I think a little fat on the dose is a good idea.
I'm glad Leo is settling in well. When J.D. and I go on vacation, it usually takes him a while to get back to some decent numbers. Part of Leo's higher numbers are probably from being in the new environment and the unknown.

Re: 9/19 Leo AMPS 398 +1 449 +5 415 PMPS 448 fattened dose

Hi Dyana - you're right I'm sure. The trip certainly brings on stress. He's settling but I think it will be a factor the entire time he is away from home.

He's here until Friday or Saturday morning, then going another 2 hours for an afternoon or possibly an overnight, then back to my apartment until Thursday, and then home. So, I figured fattening the dose would perhaps slightly offset the higher values.

We'll see. I'm using 1 unit syringes trying to measure a fat 1.25. Ha! I tried the Walmart ReLion 1/2 unit syringes and they were terrible - too much friction to fine-tune even half a unit. But I wonder if I got a bad batch because others seem to like them. I'm counting drops but I'm sure that my 1.25 varies a little every dose anyway. Just trying to be consistent.

Poor J.D. It's great he goes with you and settles down, but I wish we could explain to them what was happening, and that everything will be okay!
