I did a search and see many of you raving (or at least satisfied) with the Breeze litter system. I contemplating making the switch. My question is- can you take the pad out to catch your sugar cat's sample and test for ketones? My concern was that perhaps the zeolite pellets would have an effect on the test?

The pellets are apparently synthetic zeolite which is absorbent and traps odors. Which is kind of the opposite of what the pellets are designed to do, let the urine pass through. So I wonder about the absorbent part. They are also coated w/ a wax. I do know that zeolite is in other clumping litters.

I have wondered about what is in the pad however. Just put a piece of plastic over the pad, all you need is a drop to test for ketones and the rest can go off into the pad. You can tell where they usually go and just put the plastic there.

Also I hated the thought of putting all those pellets in the landfill, never to break down. I wash them out in a plastic sieve then soak overnight in a a 10% bleach solution, rinse and dry in the sun. No odor, I tried vinegar but you could still smell the urine.

I may do some testing, w/ weight and to see if they are ceramic. I taking a glaze formulation class and we are testing various materials. I wonder how the hold up to firing?

 Ann...be sure you cool 'em down before they go back in the box!

we love our Breeze lb!

Thanks guys! That zeolite stuff had me confused. Ann- I'll be curious to hear about the results of your experiments. And Ann, do you test ketones the way you described? So it works ok without funky test results?

Hey Celi- how many cats are using it (them?) and how often do your pellets/pads last?

Yes on the testing although Tess has never had ketones so I probably don' t test as often as I should. For a single cat the pads last 5 or 6 days, and I change out the pellets once a month. It was an easy transition for Tess as we had been using pellet litter before, Feline Pine.

I have 2 boxes...one for binks and one for the 2 girls.
binks has never had a ketone problem...but we've never had weird results...

In binks' box for ketone testing, i quit using the pads...just empty the tray and wash it once a day.
it was so easy i've never gone back to the pads.
And binks so rarely has anything other than a clean, firm BM...i change the pellets about every 6 weeks.
never occurred to me to clean and reuse them, but i think that's a great idea, Ann.

the other LB is a bit less thrilling for me.
The Adopto-girls are outside a lot in the milder weather, but Smudge occasionally has pudding poo
(she is my piggish eater and they both are dedicated hunters). And Annie wants to roam outdoors forever...with one odd exception...
now that she has the Breeze box...she refuses to pee outdoors
I always know when she pounds on the screen door latch that she has to go NOW!

so one pad usually lasts 2 days for the girls.
and i go through more pellets with them...but still less cost than litter...

I'm actually considering switching the girls back to clumping litter when they come inside for the winter...
perhaps more because of Smudge and her smell than cost.

Don't know if that helps...

Thanks, it does help. I have 3 cats, so I think cost-wise it'll be about the same, but seems beter given the dust and tracking factors of clumping litter... and now that Jetta has special needs she has her own box in my carpeted office. I'm not looking forward to my carpet damage from the clumping letter being gound in. I guess for the $15 bucks it's worth a try. I'll pick 2 up later this week and see what happens.

I had the breeze system for Emma, and it was great. Since I adopted the new girls, I've still been using the breeze box, but I switched to feline pine pellets. They're great. They really take care of the odor, and when they get wet, they just dissolve into sawdust and it falls down into the tray under the box. I don't use the pad under there anymore. I just put a few pellets in the tray, to catch whatever urine gets through the pellets. Every few days I dump the sawdust out. You can even put it in a compost pile.

I recently switched to using the pine pellet bedding they sell for horse stalls. It appears to be pretty much the same as feline pine, but it's a lot cheaper - I think I paid $6 for a 30 lb bag.

Hope everyone is doing well - the new girls and I are doing great! It's so much fun to have new, playful kitties in the house! :-D
