I apologize for the off-topic posting, but since I know most of you and you're familiar with Weeble and her tummy issues, I was hoping to get some input on the injectable antibiotic Convenia. Has anyone used it?

Because of Weeble's sensitive stomach, I am loathe to use regular antibiotics, but I feel like there's been a bit of chatter (bad) about the injectable antibiotics. The tech at the vet (whom I love) said they've never had any problems with it. But, you all know how it goes...

Thanks!

Hi Amanda

no apologies needed. You can however, cross post into health when it's med related.
there are a couple of vet techs around who frequent the health forum too, as well as Dr Lisa.

But anyway, if you haven't read this thread Mannie's Condo Sept 13
there is a discussion about Convenia.

(I'll add the link anyway: Convenia - "long lasting, single shot" antibiotic
Very important health forum thread by Dr Lisa that everyone should read and keep it in mind when considering Convenia)

Very quick,

had to find it through google-but long thread here started by Dr Lisa about the ills of Convenia:It's from the old FDMB board, I think there was another one on here too, but not come across it, but no it's not thought well of overall.

You could ask for advice on other ABs from the health board-plenty of cats here have used a variety for different issues.

Hope Weeble's ok

Thanks Ronnie (and Kate) - for referencing my condo - The discussion there is a good one.

For me - Mannie was given this drug. As if today he still has no symptoms indicating problems with the side effects, we are on day 4 now. I know for Me I will not use it again, the risks are too great. Others too have used it without complications, but should they occur, they are extremely severe. Please read the info before you decide.

I hope Weeble is OK.

The post that Ronnie provided has the post that Kate linked included.

Convenia was not formulated or FDA approved for UTIs. It was developed for the treatment of skin infections. It has become prescribed for hard to pill cats for whatever the problem may be. The other problem with the (over)use of this AB is that if a cat has a reaction to it, you can't stop giving the drug -- it lasts for 2 weeks.

Yeah, I think I'm going to say no to this.

Worse yet is now I'm seeing a whole bunch of antibiotic contraindications with Cisapride which she gets 3 times a day. Sometimes I'm surprised that my head does not actually explode. It's all that much worse when you don't trust any of your vets 100%.

Let the stressing begin!

Looking at that post of Mannie's again, I realize I read that yesterday which is how I knew it had a bad rap around here. Serendipidous, I suppose...

I wish you luck - and hear ya on the vet thing. Mine didn't even tell me there were side effects to convenia. I suppose that in all fairness I should have asked... too much stress at the vet, dummie me. Anyways - it wasn't til I got home, decide to check it out, and then kept thinking - oh great.... I wish Weeble well.
