Tuckers numbers starting to come down. I can really tell a difference in him from when he is above 20 (360) and how he is now even though he is only down to 11 (203). Miscommunication this AM with other caregiver and he never had his AMPS done. Not ideal but we got a +1. Heres hoping he keeps on steadily decreasing smoothly. No more pokies until PMPS I don't think. Unless anyone thinks I should throw in another check.

He is still ravenously hungry. I know it is best to feed at shot times but I am feeding him about every 4 hours. He is underweight and I think needs the calories. The vet calculated he needed 1.25 cans of food a day for weight gain...I think he is busting through about 3 a day right now and wanting more (she also wanted us to feed 1/8 cup of dry DM--we have chose not to do this. We did buy the bag but plan on using one or two crunchies as "treats" or when a little higher carb is needed)

Have a good day all :cat:

What great news that you notice a positive difference in Tucker! It makes all the hard work worth it!!

I forgot to get a Pre-shot once but as long as you’re testing you’ve got control! It looks like Tucker is having a nice steady slide... I think he might hit the beach today  I hope Mowgli will meet him there ;)

I subscribe to the same mentality as you RE: feeding; if they’re hungry let them eat... while our kitties are in high numbers they don’t properly process nutrients so they just need more food. I think the important period for no food is two hours before your Pre-shot so that your numbers aren’t influenced by food and you can be sure it’s safe to shoot :)

Have a great day!!

Feeding at shot time (to make sure there is food on board to counter the insulin) throughout the cycle is best. It is suggested, especially for newcomers, that food is picked up two hours before shot time.

You can return that expensive bag of DM to the vet and get a refund. Just say your cat doesn't like it.

For treats, try the freeze-dried ones. I believe Pure Bites and Orijen are available in most pet stores. If Tucker is hard to test, getting a low-carb treat with each test can be an incentive.

For higher carbs, keep a handful of cans of Fancy Feast gravy lovers on hand. It's the gravy that is high carb. Label the top or bottom of the can HC and put them to one side so they don't get used by accident.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to take the food back since I really don't see us using it. I have some friskies gravy flavours on hand but will pick up some fancy feast next grocery trip. He usually eats all the food right when it is offered throughout the day so will make sure nothing given at least 2 hours before his shots. He is good behaviour wise to test, just getting to know his ears and which areas on him are best has taken us a few days. That being said I am sure he wouldn't object to some freeze dried pure bites on occasion.
