Yesterday.

Ruby has been acting very lethargic, did not eat her PM+3 meal last night and is refusing food at shot time. I think there’s a mild URI going on in addition to the flea treatment making her feel lousy. Let’s hope she eats while I am at work today.

Have a good day everyone. :bighug:

I just stopped by to check up on y'all. I'm sorry to read that Ruby hasn't wanted to eat and is lethargic. What about Olive? Is she acting normally and eating? Ruby has been a bit up and down today with her BG (a.m. cycle) so far today.

I’m on my way home. Ruby did eat finally, but we have to bring the food to her. She’s definitely still feeling lousy. Olive has been eating but she is not her usual gregarious self, sleeping alone and in weird places. DBF has also been very sick. He was vomiting all night. I fear he has had some reaction to the pesticide. I am the only one who is well in the house, with my only complaint being all of the flea bites that are driving me nuts. They must have really attacked me when I cleaned out the litter box last night as I am covered with welts from head to toe!

I'm sorry about all the bites. And Frank! That's awful. Have you ever tried a product called After Bite. You just dab a little on the bite(s) (I realize that you have a LOT of them) and it really takes the itch down. It's After Bite the original formula and I will say that it consists of Ammonia, but it works great on fire ant and mosquito bites. Something else that works really well on itching is just to put the itchy bitten portions of your body under really hot water (as hot as you can stand it) and do this for several minutes (as long as you can stand it, which will probably only be a couple of minutes and you may have to turn the heat down). This works amazingly well if you are itchy. I read this once on a home remedy site that I read and tried it (again, on Fire Ant bites) and it worked so well! Of course, you have the bites all over, which makes it more difficult -- I'm usually just dealing with fire ant bites (hate those ants) and they are on my legs because I stepped in a nest.

Another thing that works on bites is to make a paste from meat tenderizer -- this works as well ... but it is a real MESS. I have mixed olive oil with meat tenderizer to do this.

I hope Ruby, Olive and Frank will be better soon. This has been a nightmare for you all!

Carla @carfurby, you seem to have a lot of experience with fleas. Can you tell me how long it took for you to get rid of your infestation? I've been reading that it will take at least three months. I don't know how I can live like this for that long!

Unfortunately it probably took about 3 months for me to completely get rid of the fleas. Part of my issue was the topical flea treatment I put on the cats quit working and I had to wait a month to try something new. Then that one didn't work and I had to wait another month before I found one that worked. What really worked was buying Raid flea spray and spraying the floors with that. I don't have carpet. That killed the fleas, but I had to do it once a week for several weeks and keep the cats away until it dried. It's the way the flea life cycle is that makes it so hard to get rid of them. Once you kill the adults the eggs hatch and you have new fleas. I hope you can get rid of them quicker than I did. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Gosh, Carla, I am so sorry you had to go through that! Thank you for letting me know.

The important thing right now is for me to find myself a repellent that I can put on that won't make humans or cats sick because I cannot stand being eaten by these bugs anymore. I was standing in the kitchen and the fleas were jumping up onto my ankles. I kid you not.

Everything effective seems to have DEET in it or essential oils. There seems to be no good alternative.

I had to deal with that too. That's when I got desperate and bought the Raid. For me the fleas were the worst first thing in the morning. I kept a cup with soapy water by my bed. I wore light pink sleep pants and white socks. Every morning I would get up and stand still for a couple of minutes and watch the fleas jump on my legs and pick them off and drown them in the cup. I had to do it in my bedroom and my bathroom. The seemed to help take care of the fleas that hatched during the night.

Oh Katherine I feel so awful for you, you must be going crazy with all the flea bites you have. Poor Frank I hope it's just a 24 hour bug he has. I'm sorry Olive isn't feeling like her old self. I'm glad Ruby are for you. Dam fleas!!

OMG OMG OMG that sounds horrible!!!!

I am thinking about the Raid. I hate the thought of using that stuff but I may not have an alternative.

  • Aloe vera: Aloe vera is a succulent plant. The gel in its leaves contains salicylic acid, which relieves itching and pain. You can apply aloe gel directly to your flea bite.
Try getting an aloe plant and rub it all over your flea bites

I was reading when you're that infested it's best to call a flea exterminator if the raid doesn't work. I know you don't want to have to use it but it sounds like you are really infested with them
I'll sure you'll have to get the cats out is the house maybe board them at your vets if she'll let you
Is Ruby and Olive still scratching , have you combed them and have seen less fleas on them

Found this on line
3M Ultrathon Insect Repellent Lotion

3M's Insect Repellent Lotion is some pretty heavy duty stuff. Plus, it has the advantage of providing controlled-released protection for up to 12 hours, which makes it perfect to use if you're getting flea bites while you sleep. No one wants their beauty sleep interrupted for a flea repellent re-application.

Wondering how well it holds up against fleas? Well, it does contain a lower percentage of DEET than similar products but it's undoubtedly effective. After all, this insect repellent is designed for jungles and tropics, where it protects against fiercer, blood-thirsty creepy crawlies, so preventing flea bites at home is not an issue.

Extra perk? A little goes a long way so the bottle will last you awhile - hopefully, until you've killed all the fleas currently living in your home
