:arghh:

Bell's anal gland ruptured today for the third time. Luckily got into the vet before they closed. She's back on the Clavamox for 14 days and has onsior for the pain. I am a bit at a loss. I had just taken her in yesterday for some blood work and a recheck on the anal gland. The vet had said Bell put up a huge fight, but she didn't feel any fluid in there. Just the next day it had ruptured.

After the 2-week antibiotic course, the vet wants to sedate her in order to be able to really feel what is going on in there. She said if this last effort fails, the she'll need surgery to remove the anal gland. She said this is a rather difficult surgery due to all the nerves in that area and there is a chance of incontinence afterwards, but less of a chance than if she needed both glands removed (this is just the right side). She didn't think I would need to cone Bell for this one, so at least that stress is removed.

I feel a bit helpless in this situation, but there's really not a whole lot I can do, besides keep getting her the meds. Poor girl... I don't want her to suffer through these ruptures, but I am worried about the surgery risks. If anyone has any experience in this (I know it is pretty rare for cats) please let me know. I may start a thread on the main forum for this.

Outside of that, Bell bounced up from the 68 I shot last night. Now she is coming back down.

I am so sorry Bell is unwell. :( Poor girl really doesn't look happy. Unfortunately I have no experience with this but all fingers and paws are crossed she heals fast and doesn't need surgery. I'm sorry you have to go through all this.

Posting in the main forum is a perfect idea to get more attention. But I will also tag some of our experts for help:

I’m sorry this keeps happening. I don’t have any personal experience with this. It sounds like it could be painful. Is she on medication? :bighug:

Thank you for the well wishes! I have a suspicion that the 2nd and 3rd time this has happened is due to the just how bad the rupture was the first time. I believe the original rupture was caused by constipation from all the pain meds she was on to help with her back pain. Her gland got swollen enough that I noticed it and took her in, and when the vet attempted to express the blocked gland, it ruptured pretty significantly. From what I've read, the walls of anal sac are what actually secretes the fluid that is usually expressed during a bowel movement. If that original rupture didn't heal properly, part of the sac could be closed off from the duct and keep secreting and building up pressure. Or the duct is getting blocked from the infection gumming up in there. Just a guess. The 2nd and 3rd ruptures didn't look nearly as bad (at least on the outside). I wouldn't have even noticed the one today, except I saw some blood and guck on a pillow she was sitting on.

Bell isn't on any medication besides the Clavamox and Onsior they gave her today. She has been on a very low dose of tramadol for back pain, but I eased her off that a couple weeks ago. Her bowel movements have never been better after I switched to the wet food and added a quality probiotic.

I will start another thread in the main forum tomorrow. I just really hope she doesn't need the surgery but maybe that is the best thing for her. I also read some vets will try to do an antibiotic wash of the gland, so I'm going to ask the vet about that, since they were planning on sedating her for the recheck in a couple weeks. It is really hard to judge how much pain cats are in (at least for me), and I don't want her to keep suffering from this.

If you search "anal gland" on this forum, you'll find it's not that uncommon. I had one cat who had infected glands a couple times, another one cat just once - he let me know by scooting his butt on the floor. :blackeye:. If you search "Shasta anal gland", you'll find one member who learned to express anal glands by herself. Yes, black kitty too. And cat with catitude.

I've heard that raw diets can help cats with anal gland issues - thinner poops pass more easily.

I hope you can find a solution without surgery. I'm surprised the vet didn't find anything yesterday.

Thank you, Wendy, I will do some searching here.

From what I’ve read it is a balance between too hard or too soft poops :blackeye: since cats need some sort of bulk for the glands to express naturally.

I wasn’t present when they checked her out yesterday, but I think she put up a huge fight, so I’m not sure how thorough the vet could be. Today she was not a happy girl when the vet checked it, but the vet said Bell was sooooo much better with me there than yesterday. So she must have really gave them hell.

In other Bell news, I just shot a 57 PMPS with her full dose. Her +0.5 was 74. She may be bouncing again. I should have tested more late in the AM cycle, did not realize she was still dropping, thought the insulin would be wearing off by then...

Oh poor Bell. I’m so sorry you are both going through this. She looks so sad in the photo :(
I hope they are able to help her heal and avoid surgery if possible with alternate treatments.
Sending you both warm wishes for healing:bighug:
And congratulations on another beautiful cycle!
