Here we are today:
+11 151
amps 176 1 unit + 3oz wellness canned
+6 123
+11 115
pmps 126 1 unit + 3oz wellness canned
+1 120
+3 125

I like where she is right now, but am a little concerned if she goes too much lower. Is there a preshot below which I wouldn't shoot, or reduce the amount.

hey nice shooting.
make sure she has food on board for the next few hours - start with a +1 test too.

I hope you can spot check her a few times tonight..I'm so curious as to what happens at +1 and +3

As for shooting low - the more data you collect the easier it gets - have a look at some other condos here and beans shooting low.
Honest - it gets easier! But your data collection plays a big part in feeling more comfortable with low numbers.

Check this sticky from here in LL: Lantus & Levemir Data Ready To Shoot Low Numbers

EDIT: Korbel is a she!

+1 was 120
I'll for sure be able to get a +3. Hopefully that will be right in line, because that's bed time.
I have gotten the early readings a few times and there doesn't seem to be much drop and she's normally rising going into the shot.
She has a pretty flat curve, I'm just concerned that if I shoot too low, I won't be around if she has a problem.

Hello!

I don't think I've visited you before! Welcome to lantus.

I have the feeling that you were 'used' to another insulin... it's hard to powerwash our brain and reprogram it with lantus... but it's doable.

Nice to see that Korbel is responding well to insulin already. Yellows and blues are not too bad of a start.

With respect to your question re: your business trip... your dose will depend on a few things including:
- where will Korbel be (at home, elsewhere) - much have to do with if she'll eat the same as when you are home with her;
- how many times will blood sugar will be tested (sometimes at the vet all you get is pre-shot values);
- are you comfortable that the person looking after Korbel will listen to you - vets don't typically listen, just saying.
- will this person be posting on this board to receive some assistance?

and.... lots can happen between now and your departure day.... so it will have to be a little bit of a last minute decision. However, with that said, often we try to pick a number easy to measure (0.5 or whole units, unless you trust the person to measure 0.25u) and the dose is picked with conservatism (is that a word).

I hope this helps.

Hi Helene
Korbel was nicely regulated on humulin L for many years.
She's been on Lantus for close to 5 yrs, but I never gave it the time or effort I did for lente. She settled on a dose pretty quickly, and she has always been a very easy/consistant diabetic cat, so unfotunately I got very lax with testing until she had a pretty major hypo last week. So, now I've reenlisted in diabetes 101 to get to know her on lantus a little better.

When I'm gone, the cats will both be at home (the dogs will be with the pet sitter).
My pet sitter is a very good friend that I trust completely and have complete faith in her abilities to follow directions and correctly fill syringes.
Unfortunately, Korbel will not be tested at all during the trip.
Korbel is not a friendly cat by any means and won't let anyone but me pretty much even touch her. I have serious doubts that my friend will even be able to get a shot into her, but we're going to try.
About 9 yrs ago, I had to take a long trip and I brought the animals to her house. At that time she tried to give Korbel a shot, but it failed miserably.
I'm hoping she'll have better luck this time because Korbel will be at home instead of a strange place and she's a bit older so hopefully she's mellowed some.
The last time I was gone, it was only for a few days, so we didn't mess with shots. During that time, she said that Korbel actually came out while she was here and "almost" let her touch her.
I'm leaning towards telling her 0.5units. At best she'll maybe get a few shots while I'm away, at worst none.
